Shayna Fielding is a junior from Sherman, CT studying Business Administration with a focus in Marketing. She transferred to Marist College at the start of her sophomore year and is an enthusiastic member of the college’s Equestrian team.
What made you decide to come to Marist?
They have a really great business program, the school is beautiful, and it’s the perfect distance from home. Being able to be a part of the Equestrian team is also a huge plus. My horse boards at the same barn the team uses, so it's easy to ride while I'm at school.
What has your favorite class been so far?
Surprisingly, Human Resources. I took it as a part of the Business Core and thought I wouldn’t be interested, but I really surprised myself. One of the best parts about going to a liberal arts school is getting to take classes you normally wouldn’t, so that was a cool experience. I’m in my first Marketing class this semester, so I’m starting to enjoy that just as much.
What’s your favorite study spot on campus?
The library. I get most of my homework done on the first floor, way in the back by the big windows. It’s a great people watching spot and really pretty on nice days. Plus, the Starbucks is in the library so I can always get my hot chocolate before I start studying.
What advice would you give to an incoming Marist student?
I didn’t have a freshman year experience here but definitely be patient with the adjustment period. No campus is going to feel perfect at first, it always takes some getting used to. I went to a community college before coming to Marist so being a residential student was the biggest adjustment. Luckily, Marist has some really great resources if you’re having trouble adjusting, so there is always someone to talk to if you need help.
