Do you offer a master's degree program?

No, our DPT program is a 36-month, full-time program culminating in a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.

What is the Program's accreditation status?

Marist College is seeking accreditation of a new physical therapist education program from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). The program submitted an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage, on June 1, 2017. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status. Achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status is required prior to implementation of the professional phase of the program; therefore, no students may be enrolled in professional courses until Candidate for Accreditation status has been achieved. Further, though achievement of Candidate for Accreditation status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation, it does not assure that the program will be granted accreditation. Graduation from a physical therapist education program accredited by CAPTE, 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314; phone; 703-706-3245; accreditation@apta.org is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states.

Which bachelor's degree is most beneficial?

Applicants hold a wide variety of academic majors, degrees, and backgrounds. Regardless of the specific major or degree, applicants must complete the prerequisites courses requirements and observation hours to be considered for admission.

What are the required prerequisite courses?

The required prerequisite courses for Marist's DPT program include Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Biology I and II, General Chemistry I and II, Physics I and II, 6 credits of Psychology and 3 credits of Statistics. All of the above courses must be completed with grades of "C+" or above. Please note that a "C" will not be accepted.

What type of experience qualifies for the minimum 80 hours of PT observation?

The 80 hours of volunteer or observation experience hours must be completed under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. The hours must be in a minimum of 2 different types of settings.

Do all of my prerequisite coursework and observation hours need to be completed by the time I apply to the program?

You can still apply if you have no more than 2 pending prerequisite courses in progress. Grades from Fall classes (courses taken during the application cycle) will not be used in the evaluation of the application, nor will they be used in the GPA calculations. However, at the time of admission, all pending prerequisite coursework must be completed with a "C+" or higher grade before the start of the program in January. A minimum of 80 hours of PT observation must be completed at the time of application.

What is the GPA requirement for admission to your program?

The academic standard for admission is a 3.0 GPA overall, combined with a 3.0 GPA for science prerequisite courses.

What are other factors evaluated beside academic ability?

Students who meet the GPA requirements will be invited for an interview. Scores from the interview and letters of recommendation are considered in the application process.

Do I have to take the GREs to apply to the program? How are scores from multiple GREs exams evaluated?

Yes, the GRE exam is required. We will consider the Analytical Writing section scores. The minimum required score is 3.5.

If I am denied admission, can I reapply?

Yes. Applicants who are denied admission are welcome to reapply in subsequent years. If an applicant reapplies, s/he must resubmit a PTCAS application and pay the PTCAS fees again. Repeat applicants should highlight what they have done to improve their eligibility for the program since the previous application and are encouraged to submit at least one new or updated letter of recommendation. Applicants may only apply three times for admission.

Are any of the courses offered online?

No, the DPT Program is an onsite educational model, allowing students to interact as they learn together in the classroom.

If I attended a foreign school or earned my degree outside of the United States, can someone review my transcript prior to applying?

All transcripts from institutions outside of the U.S. must be submitted to World Education Services, Inc, an evaluation service for a course-by-course U.S. equivalency report.

Are TOEFL scores required?

If the applicant is a high school graduate from a non-English speaking country, then TOEFL scores are required on the PTCAS application.

I am a licensed physical therapist. Can I enroll in your DPT program?

No. The Program only offers an entry-level DPT degree.

Will I be able to work while in the program?

The Program is extremely rigorous, so working is discouraged. However, some students may choose to work part-time to help finance their education.

What is the anticipated class size?

The Program will admit 48 students each year.

Where will the clinical education rotations be held?

Students complete 4 full-time clinical internships for a total of 36 weeks. All students will complete at least one inpatient and one outpatient experience. The remaining experiences may be geared toward the student's interests in specific settings or patient populations.

How do I register a complaint?

An individual or organization that is unsatisfied with their experience or encounter with any student, faculty, or staff member of the Marist Doctor of Physical Therapy Program should file a written complaint and send it to the attention of the Program Director. A complaint about the Program Director should be sent to the Dean of the School of Science. A response will be rendered within 30 days. There is a prohibition of any retaliation against the person filing the complaint.

Marist College has been granted Candidate for Accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA, 22314; phone: 703-706-3245; email: accreditation@apta.org). Candidate for Accreditation is a pre-accreditation status of affiliation with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education that indicates that the program is progressing toward accreditation and may matriculate students in technical/professional courses. Candidate for Accreditation is not an accreditation status nor does it assure eventual accreditation. Graduation from a PT education program accredited by CAPTE is necessary for eligibility to sit for the licensure examination, which is required in all states. Pending receipt of accreditation status, students will be eligible to take the licensure examination in January 2021.
