Orientation Placements and Surveys FAQs

Below you will find a series of frequently asked questions pertaining to the placements and surveys required for all new students. Click on the questions below to view their answers.

What is the purpose of the placements and surveys for new students?

The results of your placements will be used when your fall schedule is being created and for advising purposes in future semesters. The surveys will be used to gauge your interest in specific programs on campus so that departments can plan accordingly to meet the needs of Marist students.

What if I am having trouble loading the placements/surveys?

  • Some connection methods are slower than others. It could take three minutes or more to load the test using a very slow connection.
  • You should turn off any pop-up blocking software installed on your computer.
  • Note for the Mathematics Placement: Remember the 45 minutes to take the placement does not include the loading of it or filling out the intake form.

I'm having a computing problem that's not addressed here. Who do I contact at Marist to get additional help?

Please call the Help Desk at (845) 575-4357. Help Desk Office Hours are:
Monday through Thursday: 7:30 am to 10:00 pm ET
Friday: 7:30 am to 5:00 pm ET
Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm ET

When will I know the results of my placement tests?

The first week in August your schedule will be viewable online and information regarding your Math and your Modern Language Placements will be available.

What health information is required?

The health information submission process is completed via the Marist Health Services Patient Portal.  There are online forms to be filled out and information that needs to be uploaded. Specific instructions for the portal can be found at my.marist.edu/health-services.  Details and checklists for required health information can be found at my.marist.edu/health-forms-for-incoming-students.

As per New York State Public Health Laws, documentation of specific immunizations is required.  For more information, please see the required health information forms referenced above or visit my.marist.edu/immunization-compliance.

Student-athletes will be contacted by their coach or by a representative of the Department of Athletics about incoming varsity and walk-on physicals (not needed for club or intramural sports).  Athletes are required to submit the required health information referenced in the above paragraph in addition to those documents required by the Department of Athletics.

We recommend that all students make and keep a copy of their health forms for their own records.

When is the deadline to submit the required health information?

Health information is due by June 30th for the fall semester.

What if I can't have a physical exam by the deadline?

If a student has had a complete physical exam in the 12 months prior to their enrollment date, documentation of that physical can be submitted for review.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

If you do not submit your required information in time, a HOLD may be placed on your student account.  You will not be able to add/drop classes or move into housing until you have fulfilled the necessary requirements.

Students who are not compliant with New York State Public Health Laws regarding Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Meningococcal Requirements will not be allowed to remain enrolled in courses after 30 days from the start of the term and may forfeit all or part of their tuition.

How will I know if I have met the health requirements?

Students will be notified of missing documentation.  Automated emails will be sent regularly to notify students if they have not met the requirements.  In addition, specific messages will be sent via the Secure Message tool in the Patient Portal.  Students will receive a notification in their Marist email account that they have a message waiting in the portal.  Students will need to log into the portal to view their Secure Message.  It is important that students access the Message Center regularly.

What is the purpose of the Modern Language Placement?

The language survey and short placements are essential for the college advising process. Results are used to create a complete profile for each student, for advising purposes during all four years and to optimize the first semester freshman schedules. It will let us know what language(s) you currently speak fluently, which language you have studied, and which one you may wish to study in the future.

How can my language skills affect my academic options?

A language background can affect a number of academic choices throughout an undergraduate career: fulfillment of Core courses, study abroad, interdisciplinary minors and language requirements in some academic areas, scholarship, and long-term graduate plans. This is why a comprehensive academic profile is necessary whether or not you plan to pursue your language study in your first year.

Can the survey and placement give me credit or make me "place out" of language?

The placement is NOT used to give credit or determine whether one "places out" of language but to gather as much information as possible about a student's current abilities in one or more language, and possible interest in learning a different language. It is important to get an accurate and honest assessment so please take it seriously and do not consult any outside resources when taking the placement.

Should I take the survey even if I have never taken a language before?

Yes, for the reasons explained above. Maybe you know now, or will decide later, that you would like to start a new language and we think that is great. The General Language Survey will ensure that you will be included in our database of students interested in getting language advising for their future career plan, travel abroad, scholarships, etc.

Which language survey/placement should I choose?

The General Language Survey is for all entering first-year students. Depending on how you answered some early questions, you will be automatically directed to a compact self-assessment (for any language) or a slightly longer language placement for the language in which Marist offers a major and minor (French, Italian, Spanish).

NOTE: Elementary and intermediate level courses in all languages are closed to heritage speakers.

How long will it take to complete the Modern Language Placement?

The survey for most languages only takes a couple of minutes; the placement for French, Italian, and Spanish is a little longer. The Department will archive your score and your expressed interests. If you are not placed in a language course in your first semester, but you had wanted to be, please  contact the chair of Modern Languages and Cultures (see below) as soon as you receive your class schedule.

What if I am interested in a language that is not offered?

You should still complete the Modern Language Placement Survey, check off "other" and provide the details regarding the language you wish to study in the Personal Comments section.

Who should I contact if I have further questions about languages or the survey/placement?

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact:
Dr. Patricia Ferrer
Chair, Department of Modern Languages and Cultures
Patricia.Ferrer@Marist.edu

What are the technical requirements for taking the placement?

You should be able to take the Placement Survey and Placement on your phone or any computer with an up-to-date operating system.

Note: It is strongly recommended that you use a wired internet connection when taking the Math Placement Test.

What is the purpose of the Math Placement?

All incoming freshmen are required to take an online Mathematics Placement, which must be completed on or before Friday, June 11, 2021. Your placement into mathematics courses at Marist College will be based on the results of your online placement, your high school GPA, your high school mathematics courses, and your choice of major and minor. Please take the placement seriously.  If you score below 60% on the placement, it is recommended that you participate in a totally online review of Algebra through iLearn prior to taking your first Math class.  If you meet the requirements for the review, you will automatically be put into the review class and sent a notification that you need to do the work.  It is expected that you go through this review prior to starting your math course.  You can do it during August or anytime prior to your first Math class. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Mathematics Department by calling (845) 575-3620 or emailing Carla Hill at Carla.Hill@Marist.edu.

How long will it take to complete the Math Placement?

The time needed to complete this placement is 45 uninterrupted minutes online. Time permitting, you may check your answers by clicking the back and forward buttons before submitting your placement.

What will I need to take the Math Placement?

This placement is designed to be taken without the use of any mathematical aids such as a calculator, your notes, or a textbook. You may use scrap paper as well as pencils to work out the 40 questions. You will also need to know your major and possible minors, titles of high school mathematics courses, titles of mathematics or statistics AP exams taken, and titles of mathematics courses taken at any other college. If your major is Secondary Education, please specify the subject.

What if I am having trouble loading the placement/surveys?

  • Some connection methods are slower than others. It could take three minutes or more to load the test using a very slow connection.
  • You should turn off any pop-up blocking software installed on your computer.
  • Note for the Mathematics Placement: Remember to refresh your browser if you see any broken or missing images. Also, the 45 minutes to take the test does not include the loading of the placement or completion of the intake form.
  • It is strongly suggested that you use a wired internet connection.

Do I have to take the mathematics courses recommended by my placements?

The recommendation for placement is just that, a recommendation. Based on the criteria given (see Mathematics Placement Section), recommendations will be made for a course in mathematics; however, if you feel the placement is incorrect, you may take different courses. Ultimately, you are responsible for the selection of your college courses.

I am having trouble getting past the intake form on page 2 of the Math Placement. What do I do?

You need to fill in all the required fields indicated by a red asterisk.

What do I do if my computer crashed before I finished the placement test?

  • Please send an e-mail to the Office of Institutional Research and Planning at: instresearch@marist.edu
  • In your e-mail, please indicate your full name, your telephone number, and the date you took the placement test. A representative from the Office of Institutional Research and Planning will respond to you as soon as possible.
  • We strongly suggest you use a wired internet connection when taking this test.

I did not finish my online placement. Was it sent to be graded?

If you did not submit your answers by clicking on the SUBMIT button and you did not close your Web browser, your answers were automatically sent after 45 minutes elapsed.

How will the information in the sports interest section of the surveys be used?

This information is used to determine the extent to which the athletic interests of incoming students are being met by the current intramural, club, recreation, and intercollegiate athletics offerings on campus. Therefore, it is completed by all students prior to their arrival on campus.

I am not interested in participating in any athletic activities on campus, do I still need to complete the sports interest section of the surveys?

Your answers are important to us and there are no right or wrong answers. All students must complete this section.

I have a question about the sports interest section of the survey. Who should I contact?

Julie Byron
845-575-3000 (ext. 2594)
Julie.Byron@Marist.edu

What is the Peer Mentor Program?

The Peer Mentor Program is a way for First Year students to experience an immediate connection to the campus community. Peer Mentors are sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have experience as student leaders and extensive knowledge of the resources available at Marist. Peer Mentors work with the Office of First Year Programs to provide support and opportunities for connection to students throughout their first year.

How do I join the Peer Mentor Program?

The Peer Mentor Program is offered at no additional cost to students.

First Year students can enroll in the program by completing the online registration as part of the Required New Student Survey. All students who complete the online registration form are enrolled in the program and will be contacted in the summer regarding how to participate.

Transfer students are not required to register for the program and will be given information about peer mentoring opportunities available to them at their Fall Orientation.

What are the benefits of being part of the Peer Mentor Program?

Students who participate in the Peer Mentor program will have their Peer Mentor as an additional resource right from the beginning of their college experience as a person who can answer questions about the social and academic transition as well as direct them to the resources available on campus. While Peer Mentors are focused on providing support and opportunities for connection in the first semester, the knowledge that students gain and the connections that they make, both with their Peer Mentor and other students in the program, can benefit them throughout their time at Marist.

How is the information from the Music section of the survey used?

The Music information is used to determine the extent to which the musical interests of incoming students are being met by the current academic and extracurricular music offerings on campus. Information gleaned from this questionnaire will be used to help the Music Department program events based on the number of potentially interested musicians. Additionally, it is used to assist in the enrollment of students into music courses for their Fall semester schedule. Music courses are not mandated in the core curriculum, but a number of courses may be used toward the completion of Core Pathways. Therefore, we encourage all students to complete this questionnaire by the deadline.

You can check out a sampling of Music performances here

I am not interested in taking a music course my first semester but still want to perform with the department. How do I become involved?

Please contact Mike Napolitano in the Music Department at Michael.Napolitano@Marist.edu or (845) 575-3242 to get your name on the interest list for our performing ensembles and music camps.

I heard that all musicians come to campus early for a music camp, must I attend to be a member of one of the performing ensembles?

Student musicians are encouraged to attend Music Camps that occur the week prior to traditional move-in. Attendance at Music Camp affords you the opportunity to arrive on campus before classes begin, learn music for our first performances of the semester, and for band members to learn the field show for the upcoming football season. During this time, our first-year students are assigned an upperclassman that will act as a mentor throughout camp and the Fall semester. First-year students are introduced to the Music Program and are given a head start at acclimating themselves to the campus and the Marist experience. Many of our mentors maintain strong friendships with the underclassmen that they have guided long after their camp experience has ended. So, while not mandatory, attendance at Music Camp is the best way to join the Music at Marist family.

Information regarding Music Camps will be sent to students in late June/early July. Completing the Music section of the survey is the easiest way for us to gather the necessary information to keep you in the loop about Music Camp.

Who is Campus Ministry?

We are the Department of Religious and Spiritual Life.  Our mission is to help students grow in both areas while at Marist by providing opportunities for service, prayer, and educational programs.

How is the Religious Preference Form used?

The survey responses give us a sense of the numbers and faith backgrounds that students come from.  This helps us prepare to provide programs that hopefully will meet your needs.

It allows us to make initial contact with those of you who have had leadership experience in High School Campus Ministry and/or Church Youth Groups.

The survey also gives us an idea of who might be interested in participating in our Chapel Choir as a singer or musician.
