Hong Kong Polytechnic University - Fashion Program
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Fashion Program is a semester and academic year study abroad program for Marist students studying Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Design. Students study at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC) in Hong Kong, focusing their studies on all facets of fashion. Learn more about the ITC program here.
Hong Kong, a former British colony, is home to over seven million inhabitants. It sports an impressive skyline, a highly developed public transportation system, a major port, and a reputation as a hub for global finance and industry. Representing a fusion of eastern and western cultures, Hong Kong is home to a variety of international cuisines, cultural institutions celebrating its unique art and cinema, and sporting culture.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) campus is located in Hung Hom, Kowloon in Hong Kong. The campus is home to over twenty five thousand students studying in a variety of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate programs.
The PolyU Institute of Textiles and Clothing is host to approximately thirteen hundred undergraduate students (over two thousand students total) and a staff exceeding two hundred. ITC has a long-standing reputation for not only fashion business and design, but in applied research in fashion technology. Its connections, global network, and emphasis on research and education has led to an array of labs designated to fashion research. Beyond its research, ITC is also involved with several fashion shows throughout the year to highlight the students’ work.
Academics, Coursework, and Co-curricular
In addition to a required Elementary Chinese I course, students elect to take between three and four courses within the ITC Department. Course lists can be found on the ITC page’s inbound exchange site. Students are encouraged to explore coursework they would be otherwise unable to take to expand their professional and academic expertise in a highly competitive field.
Housing & Student Life
All incoming exchange students are placed in the Hung Hom Halls, which are closer to campus. The students are then randomly assigned to one of the 9 Halls at Hung Hom Halls, each with its own Hall culture and activities. Rooms are double-occupancy, and two rooms share a bathroom (four students to one bathroom ratio). While PolyU does not provide meal plans for students staying at the Halls, students may choose to use the pantry on each floor if they would like to cook, have their meals in the Hall canteen, or enjoy various restaurants in the neighborhood. A typical meal in a canteen costs between three (3) and six (6) U.S. dollars.
Students living in the Residence Halls have access to in-hall amenities including a game room, fitness room, game and activity room, exhibition area, and a computer room. Hall wardens collaborate to arrange inter-hall activities among the students. Past activities included a Tug-of-War competition, badminton, soccer, basketball, and volleyball competitions, as well as a past singing contest. Additionally, Marist students frequently travel in the region to explore new parts of the world.
