Study Abroad

England: Hansard Society Scholars, London (*internship required*)

The Hansard Society Scholars program in London is a semester-long (14 weeks) study abroad program that takes place at the very center of one of the world's greatest political, cultural and social capitals. Through the Hansard Society's exceptional network of contacts in and around the Houses of Parliament, the program provides undergraduates with an unrivaled opportunity to intern at the heart of the British political establishment and to take political science courses in association with the London School of Economics (LSE).*

*Scholars are enrolled as short-term associate students of the LSE and have full access to the LSE library. The Hansard Society Scholars program rents classroom space from the LSE; external examination is provided by a senior member of the LSE Government faculty, but Hansard courses are not LSE courses.

Program Dates

The Hansard Society Scholars program is a 15 credit semester.

Academic work is complemented by guest lectures with senior political figures, civil servants and journalists.  Program participants enroll in two required courses: Parliament & Politics (3 cr.), Politics & Public Policy (3 cr.), an individual research project (dissertation) on a topic of interest to the student (3 cr), and an internship (6 cr).

Scholars are placed by Hansard Society Scholars staff in internships that match their interests, expertise, and career ambitions.  Past internships have included offices of Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of the House of Lords (Peers), government ministries, House of Commons and House of Lords committees, media organizations, lobbying and public affairs organizations, among others.

Study Trips

The program includes a 4-day political study visit to Edinburgh, Scotland, a 3-day study visit to Cardiff, Wales and cultural, political and social events and activities.

Housing & Living in London

Scholars are housed in a dedicated student residence, in twin-shared rooms with access to kitchen facilities.  Participants receive a London Transport 'Oyster' Card for unlimited travel in central London on public transportation.
