API: Berlin - European Studies Program

Study for a semester in the cosmopolitan city of Berlin and gain a better understanding of German language and culture.

Program Location

Berlin, the capital of Germany, is a modern hub of art, festivals, diverse architecture, and music. Home of renowned universities, research institutes, orchestras, and museums, Berlin is known as one of Europe's most trendy and cosmopolitan cities. The city itself is easily accessible with a great public transportation system and is recognized as having a high quality of living.

Freie Universit├Ąt Berlin is one of Germany's and Europe's top universities, and houses over twenty thousand undergraduate students. The central university library is home to over 8.5 million volumes and oer 25,000 journals. In addition to the central library, there are 49 specialized libraries. The Freie Universitat library is the biggest in Germany. In recent years, the university has been developing its reputation as one of the top research universities in both social and natural sciences.

The European Studies Program (FU-BEST) was specifically founded to give North American and international students a better understanding of the German language and German culture. As such, all students are required to take a German language course and a selection of 2-4 culture classes. Advanced language speakers can enroll on the GermanPLUS+ track. For a full list of courses, please click here to visit the API web page.

Student Life & Co-curricular

To supplement classroom learning, students participate in several excursions designed to help familiarize them with areas of their host city, country, and surrounding region. Day trips typically occur on Fridays to places like Potsdam, Munich, and the Baltic Sea Coast, while international weekend trips to Denmark, London, Paris, and other locations were arranged in past terms.

One special opportunity is the Tandem Partner program, which matches full-time German students with study abroad students to facilitate intercultural exchange and integration.

Students choose between student apartments or host family accommodations. Students electing the host family option receive two meals per day and laundry as part of the accommodation. Transit passes are included with the program to facilitate travel within Berlin.

Program Cost

The program fee includes full-time tuition (12-16 credits), accommodation, program orientation, scheduled academic excursions, and international health insurance.
