Message from Sports Communication Institute Director

Welcome to Marist College and our Summer Sports Communication Institute. Here, you can write and learn about sports and the complex systems that take them from the field to your screen. Whether it's writing a game story, practicing play-by-play, or studying the impact of corporate sponsorship on stadiums, at Marist, we take the growing field of sports communication seriously. If you do too, then there is no better place to spend 13 days of your summer than here. I invite you to explore our campus, study in our library, and play in our gym - in other words, immerse yourself in all that Marist has to offer.

Professor Kathy Butsko, MA, Visiting Lecturer of Communication at Marist, is the director of the Summer Sports Communication Institute.  Professor Butsko has an extensive background working in the business of professional baseball, having worked for an organization which owns and operates a number of Minor League Baseball franchises across the United States.  In addition to her operational responsibilities, Professor Butsko worked as a liaison to the Seattle Mariners, the New York Mets, the (then) Florida Marlins, the Texas Rangers, the Tampa Rays, and several independent teams.  She frequently traveled to train staff and to assist in opening new stadium facilities.  Professor Butsko was twice named as a nominee for the prestigious Rawlings Woman Executive of the Year Award at the annual Baseball Winter Meetings.  She holds both a B.S. and an MA in Communication from Marist College.

Instruction will also be given by working professionals in sports broadcasting and sports information who will teach students hands-on skills they use on the job every day. Guest speakers from various parts of the sports industry will round out the summer institute experience.
