Year Up serves young adults, ages 18-24, who have earned a high school diploma or GED but are otherwise disconnected from the economic mainstream. These young adults participate in an intensive year-long program, composed of six months of technical training and professional skills development, followed by a six-month internship with one of their corporate partners—industry leaders in the markets they serve. Year Up achieves this mission through a high support, high expectation model that combines marketable job skills, stipends, corporate internships, and coursework eligible for college credit. Their holistic approach focuses on students’ professional and personal development in order to place these young adults on a viable path to economic self-sufficiency.
Since Year Up was founded in 2000, they have expanded to serve 21 cities nationwide. Since their first graduating class of 22 students in Boston, MA, they’ve now served more than 17,500 young adults and will serve more than 3,600 young adults in 2017. It is their mission to close the opportunity divide and ensure every young adult is able to reach their full potential, and it is safe to say that they are producing strong results. 90% of Year Up graduates are employed and/or enrolled in postsecondary education within four months of completing the program and over 250 top companies are benefiting from their efforts.
