MARIST HOSTING 18TH ANNUAL WOMEN AND SOCIETY CONFERENCE
POUGHKEEPSIE -
Marist College is hosting the 18th annual Women and Society Conference this weekend in Fontaine Hall on the Marist campus. This year's conference will pay special tribute to former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt on the 125th anniversary of her birth.
Women and Society is an academic conference covering all aspects of women and gender currently under study. Among the topics to be discussed this year are women's roles in politics, activism, and wartime; "Women in History, Art and Myth;" "Societal Views of Female Idealization;" "Pushing 'Normal;' " "Music, Artistry and Identity," "Students' First Impressions of Women in Asia," "Women's Rights Across the Globe," and "Education Outside the Classroom."
The conference keynote speaker is author Robin Gerber, who just completed her latest book, Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World's Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her (Harper/Collins). She has also written Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way: Timeless Strategies from the First Lady of Courage (Penguin/Portfolio, 2002) and Katharine Graham: The Leadership Journey of an American Icon with a foreword by Jim Collins, author of Good to Great (Penguin/Portfolio, October, 2005). Her novel Eleanor vs. Ike (Harper/Avon, January, 2008) imagines Eleanor Roosevelt as a candidate for president. Gerber is also a lawyer and senior faculty for the Gallup Organization, and a senior fellow in executive education at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park. Gerber will speak Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the Henry Hudson Room of Fontaine Hall.
