Tune into Marist on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel"

Debut of HBO Real Sports/Marist Poll tackles attitudes toward concussions in football

Program will also feature a follow-up story on Jaclyn Murphy '16 and her Friends of Jaclyn Foundation

POUGHKEEPSIE (Oct. 22, 2013) – The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, one of the nation’s premier polling organizations, and the Marist College Center for Sports Communication, one of the nation’s leaders in the study of sports issues, are teaming up with "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel," TV’s most honored sports journalism series and the only sports program recognized with a prestigious 2012 George Foster Peabody Award, to launch a polling initiative that will be unveiled when the series’ 199th edition, available in HDTV, debuts Tuesday, OCT. 22 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

This first HBO Real Sports/Marist Poll will focus on awareness of and concern towards the issue of concussions in football. Of particular importance will be two issues: the public’s general knowledge of the issues of concussions in football and the extent to which parents might prevent their children from playing youth football because of the risk of concussion. Also measured in the poll is the extent to which the reported concussion risk might keep sports fans from watching and enjoying college and professional football in the future. Results reveal important insight into the potential jeopardy both youth football and subsequently the NCAA and NFL could undergo. The poll additionally examines differences based on socioeconomics and educational attainment, measuring the extent to which relative wealth and education correlates with views about concussions and football. Bryant Gumbel will discuss these results in an exclusive release during the show’s closing commentary. A full release of results will go out to the general public on Wednesday, October 23.

This new partnership allows one of TV’s most acclaimed news magazine programs to report national public opinion on key issues. Conducted periodically in conjunction with the Marist College Center for Sports Communication, the findings of the HBO Real Sports/Marist Poll will be incorporated into various parts of the program by host Bryant Gumbel.

“Working with such a prestigious polling service is a terrific addition to the Real Sports franchise,” says senior producer Joe Perskie. “This exclusive content will hopefully provide insight, perspective and trending on important issues that are top-of-mind in the sports world.”

Also on the Oct. 22 program will be a follow-up piece by Frank DeFord to a 2009 story he did on now Marist sophomore Jaclyn Murphy, her battle over a pediatric brain tumor, and the role her relationship with the Northwestern University women's lacrosse team played in her fight and in the team's perfect season. Through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, Murphy pairs children afflicted, as she was, by pediatric brain tumors with high school and college sports teams, creating relationships that mutually inspire and motivate.
