Elizabeth Kaknes

Assistant Professor of Political Science

Bio

I am an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Marist College. Before coming to Marist, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan’s Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies. I hold a PhD in Comparative Politics from the University of Virginia. My work focuses on the political and social effects of development policy in middle-income countries. I’m interested in Latin American politics, survey methodology, democratic development, and social policy. My current research project uses original field surveys to understand the ways in which redistributive social policy changes recipients’ political attitudes in Brazil. I teach courses on the political economy of development, global health, democracy and dictatorship, introduction to comparative politics, and a First Year Seminar called “How to Make the World a Better Place.” In my free time, I love to travel (most recently to Ireland) and walk my senior shelter dog, Benny.
