Marist’s School of Communication and the Arts prepares students for careers in communication, media, and fashion & art practices, building valuable skills that complement a foundational liberal arts education. With nationally ranked programs and an excellent location in the Hudson River Valley, Marist offers a traditional college experience that is only a train ride away from the rich cultural and professional opportunities New York City has to offer.

A Day in the Life of a Communication Student

Marist students are immersed in an integrated approach to the study and practice of communication and the arts through the exploration of theories application of what they have learned in hands-on, real-world practical experiences. Learning in a hands-on environment sets students up for career success. Take a tour of our campus, and communications facilities through the eyes of one of our students.

Marist Italy: A Gateway to Global Experiences

Marist's "sister campus" in Florence, Italy combines the appeal of an American degree program and the unique experience of studying in one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Marist Italy has a longstanding partnership with Istituto Lorenzo de' Medici to offer an environment for students to engage in serious learning, explore the world, and chase serious fun. The most popular study abroad destination at Marist (among over 70 programs offered), students can choose to study for a semester, one year, or all four years. In fact, Marist is the only U.S. bachelor degree-granting institution in Florence.

Mabel combines entrepreneurial skills and community spirit to inspire change.

Inspired to Lead and Foster Community, transferring to Marist transformed Mabel's journey. As a star student and Saxbys' first Student CEO, she gained hands-on experience running a small business. Inspired by the Hudson River views and the fashion merchandising program, Mabel led sustainability initiatives, studied abroad in Italy, and grew as a dynamic leader and learner—all thanks to Marist's supportive, experiential focus.

Meet the Dean: Dr. Maurice Hall

“I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Hall as Marist’s new Dean of the School of Communication and the Arts,” said Dr. Catherine Gunther Kodat, Provost of Marist University. “He brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge and experience to the role, both as a scholar trained in communication and its related fields and as an administrator with a keen understanding of how an interrelated approach to curricular development, student support, and faculty welfare makes for a flourishing academic enterprise. We are fortunate indeed that Dr. Hall has chosen to make Marist his new creative and intellectual home.”

There were many ways in which Marist helped prepare me for success, but one specific example during my interview at Marvel comes to mind. I was asked how comfortable I was with a system used in post-production and something they didn't expect someone so early in their career to know a lot about. Luckily, I had been using it in my production classes at Marist since freshman year. It’s little things like that that continually pop up that make me very grateful for my Marist education.

The faculty within the Fashion Department have been nothing but extremely helpful. They make sure I’m registering for the right classes, as well as taking classes I want to be taking, and they help me look for internship and job opportunities. The faculty have also played a vital role in my growth as a person and have provided me with the tools I will need to succeed in the fashion industry post-graduation.

Thanks to Marist, I landed the internship opportunity of a lifetime with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. I worked on and presented a three-year, multistage plan based on bringing e-sports—an untapped demographic—to the stadium. It was a great experience.

I was attracted to both the Marist campus and the opportunity to dive into the liberal arts and explore a broader curriculum. Along with Fashion, I’ve been able to take classes in areas like environmental science and global studies. I’ve been very involved in the Fashion Program’s ethical fashion initiative.

As I saw the campus with its beautiful river views, it immediately felt like home. I noticed that all of the buildings were so updated, and the landscaping was immaculate. Plus, I liked the fact that it was easy to switch majors. I initially wanted to major in digital media, but after a year in that program and taking a few studio art courses, I realized that I really wanted to be in the studio, so I switched my major to studio art with a minor in graphic design.
