President's Office

Speeches & Communications

Dear members of the Marist community,

Like you, I was horrified and angered by Saturday’s mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood.  Tragically, 10 people were left dead and three injured.  Today our thoughts are with all the victims, their families, and the community that has been traumatized by this senseless violence.

This particular episode of violence is especially reprehensible and disturbing because the assailant is an open and avowed white supremacist who had shared his deranged beliefs online and who apparently drove hours to deliberately target a Black community.  That type of hatred is frightening, and we must recommit to doing everything we can to counter it, both individually and as a society.

If you are struggling in the wake of this tragic news, and need support, please know that Marist has resources in place to assist you:

Students should go to: https://www.marist.edu/student-life/services/counseling

Faculty and staff should go to: https://www.resourcesforliving.com/login
