Arthur B. Himmelberger, Director of the Music Department and Director of Bands, has been a member of the Marist College music faculty since January 1986. As Director of the Music Department (2001 to present) he has nurtured the amazing growth of both the performance and academic elements of the department, more than doubling them in size during his leadership.

Under his baton the Marist College Band has grown from its original "two members" in January 1986 to an organization supporting the current 150-member Symphonic Band, 60-member Wind Symphony, 150-member football marching band, 100-member basketball pep band, two flute choirs, a woodwind ensemble, brass ensemble, low brass ensemble, double woodwind quintet, hand-bell choir, percussion ensemble, jazz sextet, double string quartet, jazz band and string orchestra.

Himmelberger holds his Master of Education degree and Education Administrator's Certificate from Temple University in Philadelphia. He also holds both a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree and Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Michigan where he studied conducting with Elizabeth A. H. Green. There he served as both a Fellow of percussion instrument instruction and was the percussion section leader of the University of Michigan Symphony and Marching Bands under the mentorship of Dr. William D. Revelli.

He also served as xylophone soloist and percussionist with the United States Army Field Band, Washington, DC, performing extensively throughout the Nation as well as on the international stage. Additionally, he served as principal percussionist with the famous Allentown Band under the baton of Dr. Ronald Demkee and was a senior non-commissioned officer (Sergeant Major) of the West Point Band. At West Point he also served as the band's major musical events producer, ARMY football half-time show designer and he was selected as the West Point Band's designated member to the United States Military Academy's Bicentennial Task Force. In this latter capacity, he was the Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge of the commissioning project that produced 26 new wind band compositions, written in honor of the West Point Bicentennial. Additionally, Art designed half-time entertainment for several nationally televised NFL championship football games.

Himmelberger is currently the Associate Director of the Colonie Memorial Concert Band of Colonie, New York, Associate Conductor of the Elderhostal National Concert Band and Associate Conductor of the Windjammers Unlimited National Circus Band.

Art is a graduate of the U.S. Army's Bandmaster and Administrator courses and currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Concert Bands. Himmelberger is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, MENC, NYSSMA, PMEA, ACB, CBDNA and the Windjammers.
