Political Science enables students to study systematically the events, people, and issues that shape political decision-making. Besides focusing on the institutions, processes, and outcomes of politics, the curriculum also surveys the great thinkers who have speculated about the nature of a just and effective political system. At Marist, the Department of Political Science encourages students to become familiar with a variety of political cultures and to appreciate the unique perspectives brought by each to the world community. As a result, Political Science graduates are able to integrate empirical investigation, theory, values, and practice in understanding the world.

Political Science at Marist also strongly encourages student learning beyond the classroom through internships and field experiences. The curriculum prepares students for career options ranging from graduate or law school to careers in government, the media or the corporate world. Consistent with the College's Mission Statement, this major challenges students to confront the changing issues of the 21st century. Distinctive opportunities for our majors include participation in The Marist Poll, the Albany Internship Experience (AIE), the Washington Semester, Marist Abroad, and the Pre-Law Program, plus concentrations in Paralegal Studies, Public Administration, and Public Opinion.

Political Science Student Clubs & Leadership Opportunities

Pi Sigma Alpha is the only honor society for college and university students of government in the United States. Its mission is to stimulate scholarship and intelligent interest in political science at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The SPIE (Students Promoting International Engagement) Club at Marist is a student club that organizes events and activities focusing on global politics and economics all year round. The club is open to students of all majors.

The Center for Civic Engagement was launched to foster service learning at the College and to support productive partnerships with community organizations throughout the Hudson River Valley region. Model United Nations is an experiential learning class. This course is centered on preparation for participation in the National Model United Nations in New York City (NMUN-NY). Over 5,000 college students--more than half from outside the United States--come to New York City each spring to discuss current global issues and to participate in one of the two NMUN-NY conferences.
