The Long Reach Society
Experiential learning.
Scholarship.
A passion for history.
The Long Reach Society (LRS) and scholarship program is a community of students who are interested in a major or minor in History or American Studies and how it influences industry, leadership, and global citizenry. Long Reach Scholars meet the highest academic standards, earning them generous scholarship funding and access to a variety of activities beyond academics, including hands-on learning experiences and trips, dedicated faculty mentorship, and research opportunities.
About the Long Reach Society
Named for the Hudson River's historic "long reach" — a particularly straight, long stretch of the river that includes the Marist campus — the Long Reach Society (LRS) gives students a dynamic, collaborative community from the moment they arrive at Marist. Students can apply to the program if they plan on majoring in History or American Studies or want to pair a minor in History or American Studies with a major in another discipline.
In addition to providing generous scholarship funding, LRS inspires students across all academic disciplines to explore history and engage with the world around them given the important role history plays in all industries and in developing globally-minded leaders.
Benefits to Students
The Long Reach Society is much more than a scholarship program.
- Generous financial award applied to all four years’ tuition at Marist.
- Access to unique, high-quality learning, leadership, and mentoring experiences.
- Grants and enrichment funds to help pay for internships (including travel costs), study abroad opportunities, and classes with a travel component.
- A dedicated faculty member provides personal support, guidance.
- Research opportunities and support to apply to the prestigious Fulbright Scholar program.

Immersive Experiential Learning
One of the most valuable parts of LRS membership is access to exclusive enrichment experiences through many of Marist University's Centers for Research and Engagement and external partners. The Society also gives students memorable real-world experiences in history and public service that include trips to renowned historical sites and museums.

Multimillion-dollar Pledge Gives More Students Access to Long Reach Society
Marist University is proud to announce a generous multimillion-dollar pledge from alumni Genine and Michael McCormick ’88/’88/P’16 through the McCormick Family Foundation, that will expand opportunities for students to engage deeply with history, leadership, and civic life. In time, the total number of Marist students participating in the LRS will reach 40 thanks to this gift, building a vibrant campus community for those interested in history and civic engagement.
Dedicated Faculty Mentorship
Dr. Robyn Rosen serves as the faculty advisor to students who are a part of the Long Reach Society. She works directly with our Long Reach Scholarship recipients to pursue research and participate in unique experiences that enhance our scholars' experience at Marist. A specialist in U.S. women’s history, she’s also served as a faculty leader for the Racial Justice in the South Spring travel course, a week-long trip where students get first-hand experience with crucial sites in the struggle for civil rights, including the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the Dexter Avenue Church, and the Emmett Till Interpretive Center.
Unique Access to FDR Presidential Library and Museum, Archives
Marist is one of only six colleges or universities in the nation affiliated with a Presidential Library. Less than five miles from the Marist campus, the FDR Presidential Library and Museum has a longstanding and expansive partnership with Marist that includes giving Long Reach Society students access to important historical records and opportunities to participate in the Library's programming and internships.
Additional Resources
The Long Reach Society provides us with countless opportunities for learning, fun, personal growth, and real-world connections. These experiences go far beyond academics or career development—they foster mentorship from upperclassmen, personal guidance from our faculty advisor, and connections with professors and fellow students. Most importantly, Long Reach has created a close-knit community, where we’ve bonded over late-night discussions or simply shared the awe of standing where history happened.

LRS Scholarship Eligibility and Academic Profile of Applicants

Leadership experience, community engagement, and a demonstrated passion for history are equally important components of a competitive candidate.
While most Long Reach Society members major in American Studies, History, or History Education, the scholarship requires a history minor at minimum while majoring in other academic programs.
