Baccalaureate Awards

Academic Affairs

The Valedictorian Award recognizes distinctive academic achievement. Eligibility includes the completion of at least 90 credits of study at Marist, and at least six semesters as a full-time student.

Emma majored in psychology with a minor in social work. She is a member of the Dean’s Circle, was on the dean’s list each semester, and was admitted to Psi Chi, the international honors society in psychology. In addition to her studies in psychology, Emma also took courses in biology and business administration. She completed four internships during her time at Marist and participated in multiple undergraduate research studies. Emma developed and implemented a research project which focused on the analysis of intersectional identities in healthcare professions. She presented her findings at the Eastern Psychological Association conference in February 2024. Her extracurricular activities included competing on the women's crew team, service as a research methods assistant, and president of the College's Best Buddies chapter. Emma envisions a career in healthcare administration and intends to pursue graduate studies in business administration after graduation. Emma is deeply grateful for the exceptional education and guidance she has received from the Marist faculty and administration.
 

The Salutatorian Award recognizes a graduating student who has completed at least 90 credits of study at Marist and has attained the highest or second-highest grade point index in the class.

Erica Kossman is thrilled to be receiving the Salutatorian Award for 2024. Erica majored in psychology with minors in theatre and creative writing. She presented research at several Eastern Psychological Association conferences and at Marist’s Celebration of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities. Dr. Kimery Levering was her faculty research mentor. She was also a member of the Humarists improvisation group and acted in several Marist theater productions. After graduation, Erica plans on attending graduate school for clinical mental health counseling.
 

The General Excellence Award recognizes a graduating student who has completed at least 90 credits at Marist and has attained the second- or third-highest grade point index in the class.

Brendan Gibbons graduated with a degree in computer science. During his first five semesters, he achieved a 4.0 grade point average while also working part-time. After graduation, Brendan will continue his graduate studies at Marist, after which he will pursue a career in full-stack software development.
 

The Merit Award recognizes a graduating student who has completed 60–89 credits of study at Marist and has attained the highest grade point index in the class.

Marissa Leombruno graduated Marist College summa cum laude with a degree in medical laboratory . At Marist, she worked as a laboratory assistant for both clinical microbiology and immunohematology. In addition, she completed numerous clinical rotations throughout the hospitals in the Poughkeepsie region. After graduation, she is going on to take the ASCP exam to become a licensed Medical Laboratory Scientist and is looking forward to continuing her career in prestigious hospitals in New York.
 

The Award for Academic Distinction recognizes a graduating student who has completed less than 60 credits of study at Marist and has attained the highest grade point index in the class.

Emily graduated from Marist with a degree in professional studies. She works in banking where she enjoys helping others achieve financial freedom. In her free time, Emily loves to go to the theater and support live performances. She is the proud mom of two cats and wants to thank her family for their unconditional support and encouragement. After graduation, Emily plans to pursue a graduate business degree with a special focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
 

School of Communication and the Arts

Mattie graduated summa cum laude with a degree in communications, with concentrations in advertising and public relations and a music minor. During her time as an undergraduate student, she studied abroad in Florence, Italy, worked as a tutor, and was a member of PRSSA. She was also involved in the Marist Orchestra and Chamber Strings Ensemble. This fall, she will continue her studies at Marist in integrated marketing and communication. Mattie is grateful for the endless support of her family, friends, and professors during her time at Marist.

This award is given to the graduating communication major who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and a significant level of service to the College and the community.

Caitlin Fracasso graduated summa cum laude with a degree in fashion design and a minor in fashion merchandising. She worked as a photographer for Marist’s fashion magazine, the Measure, and studied abroad in Florence, where she dressed backstage at Milan Fashion Week. Her education at Marist and her work experiences in New York City helped her develop her senior thesis collection, “The Art of Preservation,” which analyzes the connection between preserved flowers and memory.
 

This award is given to the graduating digital media major who has excelled in their coursework, demonstrated exceptional artistic creativity, contributed to the department, and exhibits leadership qualities.

Caroline Robitaille graduated magna cum laude with a degree in digital media with a concentration in graphic design, and minors business and photography. She was on the Dean’s List every semester. During her time at Marist, she co-designed her senior exhibition catalog and had the opportunity to have her work shown in several exhibitions at the Steel Plant Gallery. This past summer and winter break, she worked at Oma’s Pride as a Marketing & Design intern. Upon graduation, Caroline intends to pursue a career in graphic design.
 

This award recognizes outstanding academic performance in fashion merchandising and distinguished participation in the activities of the department.

Sydney graduated with a degree in fashion merchandising and a minor in graphic design. She was on the Dean’s list every semester at Marist, and she was a model coordinator on the production team for the 36th Silver Needle Runway Fashion Show. She completed two internships with BCI Brands and Modatrova. She has also been a member of MPorium at Marist for three consecutive semesters serving on the visual merchandizing team. She is now the student director of events and community outreach, and she works as a maker lab technician.
 

This award is given to the graduating senior who has excelled in their fine arts, studio art, or art history coursework and has become involved in the discipline of art beyond the classroom.

Carly graduated with a double-major in studio art and art history. She participated in the Venice Biennale Program, studied abroad in Florence, and participated in the Hudson mural project and NYAA summer residency program. Carly also received special recognition with the Ed and Pamela Smith independent studio space. She was a docent at the Magazzino Italian Art docent, and Steel Plant gallery attendant. After graduation, Carly will be attending a three-month residency in Colorado at Anderson Ranch and pursuing graduate studies in painting at the New York Academy of Art.

This award is given to the graduating senior whose achievements in and out of the classroom demonstrated a unique blend of game design, technical, and artistic ability.

Thomas Curran graduated magna cum laude with a major in games and emerging media, and a minor in computer science. He is part of the Honors Program and was on the Dean’s List every semester. As president of the Game Developers Club, he guided members in coding and design lessons with a focus on practical applications used in the industry. After college, he will pursue a career in game programming.

This award recognizes outstanding academic performance in media studies and production as well as distinguished achievement in internships, community service, or student organizations related to the department.

Stella graduated with a degree in media studies and production. Her interest in filmmaking started in high school, where she captured memorable events for friends and turned them into art. Her art and practice have been fostered and mentored especially by the media studies faculty. Over the years, her passion has shifted to documentary work and sharing other people’s stories. Stella served as the vice president of operations in the Epsilon Upsilon chapter of the Tri Sigma sorority, as well as the captain of the Marist College Dance Team. Her time at Marist has been filled with opportunities for exploration, leadership, and new experiences and she deeply appreciates the special role the Marist faculty played in her academic development.

The recipient of this award must complete a music minor, participate in various music programs with the College, exhibit leadership qualities, and demonstrate artistic creativity.

School of Computer Science and Mathematics

This award was established by the Marist College Software Engineering Research Fund in honor of its founder, Dr. William Cadden, a distinguished IBM computer scientist.

Kyle majored in computer science with minors in information technology and cyber security. During his time at Marist, he tutored students in the programming lab, was part of the Marist/IBM Joint Study program, conducted research on large language models, and presented his research at multiple conferences. He was a teaching assistant for a software development II course and was highly engaged in other research endeavors in the School of Computer Science and Mathematics.

This award is given to the graduating senior whose achievements in or out of the classroom demonstrated an unusual depth of knowledge and creativity in cybersecurity and related disciplines.

Daisy graduated summa cum laude with a degree in cybersecurity and minors in computer science, information systems, and information technology. She also graduated from the Honors Program and conducted research in post-quantum cryptography and machine learning-driven Mac malware detection as an honors student. She contributed to campus by establishing a malware analysis lab and worked as a peer tutor. Daisy is a member of Alpha Chi and Order of the Sword & Shield national honor societies, presented research at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference in Chicago, IL, received a scholarship for attendance at the OBTS Mac security conference in Spain, and studied abroad at Trinity College, Dublin. After graduation, she will start her career at JPMorgan Chase in their Mainframe Software Engineer Program.

This award is given to the graduating senior whose achievements in or out of the classroom demonstrated an unusual depth of knowledge and creativity in information systems.

Joseph graduated summa cum laude with a degree in information technology and systems and minors in cybersecurity and business. Joseph, who appeared several times on the Dean’s List, blends academic excellence with real-world experiences, which is highlighted by internships at Major League Baseball and PKF O'Connor Davies. Joseph was inducted to Alpha Chi National College Honor Society and was a student leader as the Vice President of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Post-graduation, Joseph aspires to become a Cybersecurity Analyst, leveraging a solid foundation in IT and security principles.

This award is given to the graduating senior whose achievements in or out of the classroom demonstrated an unusual depth of mathematical knowledge and creativity.

Kathryn is graduating with a degree in applied mathematics and a minor in data science and analytics. She is also graduating from the Honors Program. While at Marist, she was a math lab lead tutor and the Math Club president. She also received the early career undergraduate mathematics research award, and she was the vice president of Marist’s chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society. She was also an active member of the Dean’s Circle, and she earned honors in the mathematics major for her work on fluid dynamics.

School of Liberal Arts

This award honors a graduating senior who has achieved distinction in analytical and expressive skills, and whose high scholarship index and positive participation in campus life have demonstrated commitment to the values of Marist College.

Lorah Murphy majored in English with a concentration in writing. She is a member of the Honors Program and minored in history and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. She is the recipient of the Stemmler/Dennis LGBT& Award and has presented papers and collections of poetry at two Sigma Tau Delta conventions, the Student World Affairs Conference, and the Supernatural Studies conference. She is President of Marist’s Sigma Tau Delta chapter and is a member of Phi Alpha Theta and Alpha Chi. Lorah will work in writing education upon graduating before pursuing a graduate degree in English.

This award is given to the individual who has done exceptional work in history courses and has compiled an overall record of high academic achievement.

Isabella is graduating with a degree in history/adolescent and special education with a minor in French. She studied abroad in Paris at the Sorbonne and in 2024 presented at the Student World Affairs Conference. She was a member of the Dean’s Circle, Teachers of Tomorrow, and the Phi Alpha Theta history honors society. After graduation, she will continue pursuing graduate education in education and will be applying for the Fulbright Scholarship. In the future, she plans on becoming a history teacher.

This award is given to the individual who has done exceptional work in philosophy courses and has compiled an overall record of high academic achievement.

Gianna Nicosia is a philosophy and psychology double major with a minor in cognitive science. She is the editor-in-chief of the Marist Undergraduate Philosophy Journal, worked as a project assistant for Dr. Andrei Buckareff, and participated in the Mid-Hudson Undergraduate Philosophy Conference. She is a member of the Psi Chi International Honors Society in psychology and presented her research at the Eastern Psychological Association. After Marist, Gianna plans to pursue a doctorate in behavior analysis.

This award is given to the graduate who, having earned at least 24 credits in political science and significantly exceeded a 3.0 GPA both in the major and overall, offered significant involvement in campus activities and shows potential for leadership.

Kaylee Brard graduated with a double-major in political science and global studies. She minored in social work and she was captain of the Water Polo team. She interned for the Sunwater Institute where she studied rights and liberties. She also joined the Today’s Student Coalition as a student ambassador on behalf of Higher Learning Advocates to expand and empower the voices of students. She also interned at Great Commission United, a nonprofit in Cape Town, South Africa, and in September will join the Peace Corps in Morocco as a Youth Development Specialist.

This award is given to the graduating senior who has achieved excellence in the mastery of the Spanish language, and who manifests a deep appreciation and understanding of the literature and culture of Hispanic civilization.

Chloe Aznar double-majored in psychology and Spanish. Last year, she studied abroad in Madrid, Spain where she lived with a Spanish-speaking host family. Chloe has been a Resident Assistant at Marist for two years, a member of the psychology club, the Hispanic/Latino club, and the Spanish Honor Society. This year she completed an internship with the Adriance Memorial Library in Poughkeepsie, where she helped them translate their website content from English to Spanish. Chloe will enter the workforce upon graduation with plans to continue her educational journey in the near future.

This award is given to the graduating senior who has compiled an excellent undergraduate record, including coursework in survey research; participated extensively in statewide and national public opinion surveys; provided leadership in the planning and implementation of MIPO activities; and successfully completed an internship at MIPO or related activity.

Alyssa Raimondi graduated summa cum laude with a degree in communication and a minor in graphic design. She has worked at the Marist Institute for Public Opinion since 2020. Alyssa started as a survey assistant at the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, and she became a head coach and a communications and training associate. She was the president of PRSSA, publicity director for North Road Communications, and a member of Alpha Chi and Lambda Pi Eta honor societies. After graduation, Alyssa will continue her academic journey in Marist’s integrated marketing and communication graduate program.

This award is given to a graduating senior who has contributed significantly to the Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership and has made important service contributions on our campus and in the community.

Haley Fasano is a double major in social work and psychology with minors in sociology and Italian. Haley is passionate about making a difference in her community and she is involved in Habitat for Humanity and the Crisis Text Line. In 2023, Haley participated in the Tarver Internship Program and worked at Family Service’s Teen Resource Activity Center (TRAC). Haley was recognized as a Civic Innovation Scholar for her projects with TRAC by the Partners for Campus Community Engagement. In the fall, she will be pursuing graduate studies in social work at Fordham University.

School of Management

This award acknowledges the senior accounting major who possesses the highest cumulative grade point averages in accounting and overall, and who has provided service to the Beta Alpha Psi honor society.

Sasha graduated with a degree in accounting and minors in French and Africana studies. She was on the Dean’s List every semester and she was inducted into French national honor society Pi Delta Phi. As a member on the Volleyball team, she received numerous special awards and recognitions, including being named to the MAAC All-Academic Team for three consecutive years, MAAC first team in her junior and senior years, MAAC volleyball player of the year, ECAC offensive player of the year, ECAC first team her junior year, and she is an All American Honorable mention.

This award acknowledges the senior economics major who has demonstrated exceptional understanding of contemporary economic issues and has shown outstanding promise through internships, economic research, or special projects.

John graduated with a degree in economics with minors in political science and environmental policy. He studied abroad in the Netherlands where he studied and researched water management policy. For his capstone course, John researched the effects of green building rating systems on commercial real estate values. John was also a member of the Rowing Team and earned IRCA scholar athlete honors. After graduation, John plans to study law and begin a career in environmental law.

This award acknowledges the senior business administration major who pursued an area of emphasis in marketing, management, entrepreneurship, or international business and has achieved outstanding academic performance and excellence in extracurricular activities.

Jacqliene graduated with a degree in business administration and a minor in global studies. She is also a member of Marist’s Honors Program. She graduated magna cum laude in three years, and achieved the Dean’s List each semester. She is a member of Alpha Mu Alpha honor society of the American Marketing Association. She was a recipient of Marist’s Presidential Scholarship and the Debra Sue Levantrosser Women of Marist Scholarship. She was active in the Marist community, and she served as the president of the Italian American Society, she was public relations and sponsorship director for the Hudson Rally for St. Jude, a news anchor and writer on MCTV, and a leading actress in Marist Theater mainstage productions. She is also a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma national sorority, Women in Business Club, the Dance Ensemble, and she volunteered for the Office of Spiritual Life and Service. Jacqliene held four different internship positions and worked part-time on campus in the athletics business office.

This award acknowledges the senior business administration major who pursued an area of emphasis in finance and has achieved outstanding academic performance and leadership in extracurricular activities related to finance.

Sarah Walsh, from Seaford, New York, graduated with a degree in business administration with a concentration in finance and a minor in global studies. She has been heavily involved in the Marist community throughout all four years holding numerous leadership positions, such as the vice president of the business club and the current co-president of the investment club. She also was selected to represent Marist in the national CFA research challenge where her team placed third in the region. Additionally, Sarah was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, a business honor society that recognizes the top ten percent of undergraduate students, and she is the BGA vice president. Upon graduation, Sarah will join Citigroup as a financial analyst in New York City.

School of Science

This award is given to a student who has completed a minimum of 24 credits of study in athletic training at Marist and has achieved recognized excellence in academic performance.

Nicholas is graduating with a degree in athletic training. During his time at Marist, Nicholas participated in many professional development opportunities through the athletic training program, and he was recognized in 2024 for his outstanding research at the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association Conference. Nicholas used his training to give back to the community, volunteering at the New York City and Boston marathons.

This award is given to the student who has completed a minimum of 24 credits of study in biology at Marist and achieved recognized excellence in academic performance.

Kelly Rose Walek graduated with a degree in biomedical sciences. While at Marist, she conducted research in molecular biology, and she worked as a tutor, a vivarium technician, and a laboratory assistant for both Molecular Biology and General Biology II. She interned at Englewood Health and served as Club Lacrosse President in the 2023-24 academic year. She is honored to have been a part of these fulfilling academic and personal opportunities at Marist. She would like to thank her family, professors, namely Dr. Victoria Ingalls and Dr. Michel Becuwe, for their endless support in her academic career.

This award is given to a student who majored in chemistry or biochemistry and completed a minimum of 24 credits of study in chemistry at Marist, achieving recognized excellence in academic performance.

Amber Haqu majored in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry. They have been diligently completing this degree as a part-time student over the past six years, having previously received an A.A.S. degree in veterinary technology from SUNY Ulster in 2018 and a B.A. in fine art from York College in 2010. During their time at Marist, they have been working part-time as a Licensed Veterinary Technician at Rhinebeck Animal Hospital and at Marist as a supplementary peer instructor for general chemistry. At Marist, they were awarded the ACS Analytical Chemistry Award and worked on a research project with Dr. Megan Dennis investigating lysosomal protein changes in AP-3 deficient mouse melanocytes. Amber participated in Marist’s Celebration of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities in 2023 and 2024, in addition to other poster presentations this year, to share their research with the broader Marist community. They intend to continue to contribute to scientific research in the future and will continue working as a licensed veterinary technician as they pursue other academic and research opportunities.

This award is given to a student who has completed a minimum of 37 credits of study in medical technology at Marist and achieved recognized excellence in academic performance as well as demonstrated potential for growth in the profession of medical technology.

This award is given to a senior who has achieved a grade point average of 3.25 or greater; participated in research, internships, scientific presentations and/or related work experience beyond the expectations of the major; and compiled a record of service to the School of Science, the College, or the local community. The recipient should also show promise for continuation of their education at the professional- or graduate-school level.

Jessica graduated summa cum laude with a degree in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry, and minors in mathematics and biology. She was the Dr. Andrew A. Molloy Scholarship in Chemistry recipient and presented research from her LaPietra Chemistry Summer Research Fellowship at the 2024 ACS Spring Conference in New Orleans, LA. Jessica received a college recognition award in organic chemistry from the Mid-Hudson American Chemical Society. In the fall, Jessica will pursue doctoral studies in chemistry.

This award is given to a student selected by the School of Science faculty in recognition of overall academic performance with a primary focus on achievement in research.

Tinsley graduated with a degree in chemistry and a minor in environmental science. As an Honors Program student, she completed two research projects and she presented her research on microplastics in the Hudson River estuary at the 2023 AGU conference in San Francisco. She has also been active in the music department, playing in the orchestra, band, and handbell choir. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, the band service fraternity. She would like to thank the chemistry and music faculty for their support.

School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Dr. Kayiira was a criminal justice faculty member (1984-1987). Upon returning to his native Uganda to serve as Minister of Energy, he was incarcerated and then assassinated. In his memory, the Kayiira Award was created to recognize the criminal justice graduate who best combines academic excellence with strength of character, integrity, and service to the major.

Haley graduated from Marist with a degree in criminal justice and a minor in political science. She also completed the paralegal certificate. At Marist, Haley was an active community member, serving as a judicial officer for the Student Government Association. Haley competed on the Marist moot court team, and during her of the Marist Moot Court team. During her senior year, she orchestrated a book drive as the president of the Marist College Chapter of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.

This award is presented annually to a teacher-education graduate whose commitment to personal academic excellence, professional excellence as a teacher, and service to children and youth reflects the high ideals of St. Marcellin Champagnat, founder of the teaching order of Marist Brothers, who established Marist College.

Payton graduated with dual certification in childhood education and student with disabilities grades 1-6, and a certification in birth through grade 2. She completed student teaching at both Violet Avenue Elementary School and the Dutchess BOCES Salt Point Education Center. Payton is currently the president of Kappa Delta Pi, the education honor society, and participated in the culturally responsive spring attachment program to Hawai’i. After graduation, she will return to Marist to begin graduate studies in contemporary curriculum and instruction.

The recipient of this award has achieved an exceptional academic record and produced exemplary work in the realm of undergraduate research, internship, and/or service to the department. Their contribution exemplifies the core goals of the psychology major at Marist.

Rachel graduated with a degree in psychology and a minor in cognitive science. She was the president of the Psi Chi international honor society and a member of the Alpha Chi honor society. Rachel has showcased her research at two Eastern Psychological Association conferences, the most recent of which she received special recognition. Additionally, she has presented her research and acted as a judge of student posters at Marist research conferences. While at Marist, Rachel worked as a teaching assistant for the summer precollege psychology program and research methods II classes, she was a research assistant at Marist and West Point, and she volunteered as a student ambassador during prospective student events for the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. In the fall, she will be attending Syracuse University to pursue her PhD in Cognitive Psychology.

The social work faculty annually recognizes a student who intends to practice social work and who clearly identifies with the purposes, goals, and ethics of the profession. In addition, the selected student has achieved a GPA over 3.0 and has served the social work program through the Social Work Association or by supporting fellow students and representing the program to the College and larger community.

Kelly is a social work major, minoring in sociology, psychology, and women, gender, and sexuality studies. Her internships include work at Gateway Hudson Valley PROS and River Haven Youth Homeless Shelter. Kelly served on the Marist Social Work Association Board as secretary, vice president, and president. She is the secretary of the Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society, Alpha Chi Honor Society, and Dean’s Circle. Kelly will be attending graduate school in social work at Columbia University.

School of Professional Programs

This award honors the unique academic commitment required by the adult student, who is often juggling their academic studies, family responsibilities, career, and community involvement. It is given to a graduating adult who has excelled in their course work; engaged in the academic process, including building relationships with faculty and peers; and demonstrated leadership both in and out of the classroom.

Student Affairs

This award is presented to the graduating student who has compiled an impressive record of volunteer activity on and/or off campus, demonstrating the College’s traditional values of concern for the disadvantaged and service to the community.

Sydney majored in biology with a minor in psychology. With her sorority, Tri-Sigma, she collaborated with Liberty Partnership in Poughkeepsie on many fund drives and helped coordinate donations. She was the executive director of the Hudson Rally for St. Jude Club where she worked with a team of many students to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Alumni Association

Awards are given to two graduates who exemplify the true spirit of Marist College. Recipients will have made a significant contribution to the Marist community and show promise as a loyal and supportive member of the Alumni Association. Nominations are made by Marist alumni working at the College.

Charlotte Greene
Charlotte Greene graduated with a business administration degree with a concentration in human resources and a double minor in public relations and women, gender, and sexuality studies. She is a member of the TRiO student support services program. During her time at Marist, she interned at Teneo CEO Advisory Firm recruitment team. She also worked with Marist alumni through the Office of Advancement and with prospective students as a tour guide and a member of the Ambassador Club. She was president of Delta Alpha Pi and advocated for student with disabilities at Marist. Additionally, she studied business in Dublin, Ireland. After graduation, Charlotte is excited to begin her career as an Associate Consultant at Beacon Hill Staffing Group in New York City.

Avalon Johnson
Avalon double-majored in environmental science and policy and biology. While at Marist, she advocated for sustainability across campus as the deputy vice president of sustainability for the Student Government Association. She was a member of the Women’s Rowing Team and served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Ladies Empowering Athletic Programs Council. Additionally, Avalon founded the Outing Club, worked on undergraduate research projects, and was a teaching assistant for environmental science courses.
