Kathleen McNulty
Senior Professional Lecturer of Journalism and Communication
Bio
Kathleen McNulty joined the Marist faculty in 2016 after a distinguished career in the fields of journalism and media.
Her award-winning expertise includes news and depth reporting as well as feature, editorial and column writing for Gannett Co., the largest newspaper company in the country, and for the Associated Press Wire Service.
Kathleen’s enterprise reports covered topics such as the struggles of long-term AIDS sufferers and the toll of drunken driving accidents on victims’ families. Her coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks included exclusive interviews with the Poughkeepsie mayor whose husband perished and a young Fishkill father who miraculously crawled out of the rubble
Among other notable interviews were fitness expert Richard Simmons, whose serious side surfaced in efforts to help the morbidly obese, and Sound of Music matriarch Maria von Trapp, whose story is known the world over.
As an editorial board member, she interviewed political leaders such as former Gov. Mario Cuomo and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand as she helped craft the newspaper’s stance on a wide range of education, criminal justice, environment and health issues.
Her long-running column on the humor of family life, an audience favorite, was distributed nationally by Gannett News Service and broadcast on WAMC Radio, an NPR Affiliate in Albany, N.Y.
She continues to work as a freelance writer, believing that keeping her hand in the business serves her students well.
As an instructor at SUNY New Paltz, Marist College and Vassar College for the past 15 years, she’s had the privilege of teaching well over 1,500 students in journalism and communication courses ranging from introductory to the most advanced levels.
Kathleen has had a long relationship with Marist, beginning with her undergraduate studies, when she wonderful teachers who prepared her for a profession in media. As a senior, she was chosen for an internship at the Associated Press Wire Service, and began working for the AP at its worldwide headquarters in Manhattan the week after she graduated from Marist.
Now, she is giving back at the campus where it all began, hoping she can provide the kind of instruction and mentorship she experienced when she was a student at Marist.
