Phishing: New York - DMV: Please update your contact information

We received a report that one of our staff members received a text message purporting to be from the NY Department of Motor Vehicles, advising them that they had to update their information.  The text message included a shortened URL from ow.ly, which led to the deceptive site shown above.

Why this is phishing

  • The link is not the NYC DMV (although it looks very convincing) - all official state sites end with .gov
  • The website is asking for a large amount of personal data, including a Social Security Number

Additional notes

  • This is an extremely dangerous phishing attempt. Never enter your personal information into any website, unless you have verified it is legitimate.
  • Ow.ly is often used to distribute malicious websites.
  • A little paranoia goes a long way! Be suspicious of any text messages similar to this one.
