Phishing: Recalculation of your tax refund payment

Why this looks valid

  • This email appears to come from the Internal Revenue Service
  • The message also appears to be routing through Marist College
  • $1,400 is the exact maximum amount of the federal stimulus money

Why this is phishing

  • The website link does not go to a Marist College website or any US Government website
  • The email is generic and has no specific information that is directed to the recipient

  • This is an extremely dangerous phishing attempt. If you clicked on this link and filled in your credentials, please contact the Help Desk immediately at x4357 (HELP) or helpdesk@marist.edu.

  • Remember:  always check the link.  You can hover over the link in the email to ensure that it going to a Marist College service.  
  • Report it as phishing to Microsoft. In the Outlook web interface, click the Junk drop-down menu, and click Phishing.  Every user who reports a malicious message helps Microsoft to recognize these types of messages in the future.
  • A little paranoia goes a long way! Be suspicious of any email messages similar to this one.
