Why this looks valid

  • The email appears to be from Citibank
  • Banking institutions may send similar emails when there are potential account issues

Why this is phishing

  • The link does not go to Citibank
  • Awkward sentence construction, typos, and inconsistent punctuation are good indicators of malicious emails
  • The technical details and strong language referencing security, privacy, and compliance are designed to confound and confuse the recipients

  • This is an extremely dangerous phishing attempt. If you clicked on the link and filled in your personal information, please contact the Help Desk immediately at x4357 (HELP) or helpdesk@marist.edu .
  • Remember:  always check the link.  You can hover over the link in the email to ensure that it goes to the service referenced in the email.
  • Report this message to Microsoft. In Outlook on the Web, click the Junk menu, and select Phishing.
