Education Department Alumna Gives Back!
Kathryn ‘Katie’ Nixon to Establish the Hudson Valley New Teacher Institute.
Katie Nixon '05 is an English teacher at Arlington High School. Upon receiving the prestigious National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certificate in 2014, Katie proposed the Institute to her alma mater, the Marist College Education Department, and the Teachers of Tomorrow (TOT). Collaborating with faculty, the Institute idea spread to SUNY New Paltz, Vassar, and Mount St. Mary. Katie recruited more than twenty-five area teachers and school administrators to be panelists for the Institute. She arranged for Ms. Debra Calvino, New York State’s 2010’s Teacher of the Year, to be the keynote speaker at the Institute’s inaugural event that was held on April 16th in the Marist Student Center.
The Institute explicitly reinforced the expectations and responsibilities faced by education major seniors as they prepare for their student teaching experience. Panels were held on curriculum, functions of special service personnel, time management, demands of student teaching and interview skills.
Katie’s initial success with the Institute has reinforced her commitment to helping those new to teaching. She has begun planning for the Second Annual Hudson Valley New Teacher Institute.
