Stephen Katz
Medical Director, Physician Assistant
Bio
Stephen A. Katz was raised in Ellenville, New York and completed his secondary school education at The Hun School of Princeton, New Jersey. In 1964, he graduated with a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and then earned his medical degree at the University of Birmingham, England in 1969. He completed internship and residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1972. That same year he achieved Board Certification in Internal Medicine and joined the Psychosomatic Medicine Program at the University of Rochester as a Fellow and an Associate Professor of Medicine.
In 1974, Dr. Katz joined the The Mid-Hudson Medical Group. During that time, he practiced Internal Medicine and was also a partner, an Officer of the Corporation, a Board Member, and Chairman of several operational committees.
Dr. Katz’s primary hospital affiliation was with Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He served in many leadership roles, including Chief of Medicine, President of the Medical Staff, Chair of the Audit Committee, Chair of the Peer Review Committee, and Member of the Board of Trustees. He was appointed to the Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Health Sciences Advisory Board at Marist College and served from 1999 until its dissolution in 2014.
In September of 2005, Dr. Katz accepted the full-time position of Chief Medical Officer/Senior Vice-President of Medical Affairs at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. During that time, he also achieved his Certified Physician Executive accreditation. He retired from VBMC in 2013.
Over the past 15 years, Dr. Katz served on several community boards, including Abilities First and Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley.
In April of 2015, Dr. Katz was appointed as the first Medical Director of Marist College’s Physician Assistant Program. The Program achieved full accreditation in 2020. He is actively involved in a number of Program committees, including Admissions, Curriculum, and Progress and Remediation, and enjoys teaching students clinical medicine.
