September 13, 2018 — An artistic exploration of Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein is coming to the Marist College Art Gallery. The exhibition, “Frankenstein: Konfidential,” will be on view September 27-October 20, and is free and open to the public.

“Frankenstein: Konfidential” is a unique project that combines storytelling and visual art to reimagine Shelley’s masterpiece as a serial novel that takes place in Nazi Germany during World War II. The story is by Tommy Zurhellen, an author and professor of English at Marist, and the paintings featured in the exhibition are by artist Hyesung Marriage-Song. The exhibition marks the 200th anniversary of the book’s publication and will travel to Brooklyn in November for an exhibit at Gowanus Loft at Gowanus Industrial Arts Complex.

Although Frankenstein was published in 1818, Zurhellen believes it has resonance now. “The themes in the original are so important even today, and we wanted to pay homage to a true literary classic,” Zurhellen explained.

Gallery Director Ed Smith agreed. “I’m especially pleased that we are able to host an exhibition such as this, which brings to the community an important contemporary understanding of a classic work.”

The exhibition opens with a reception on September 27, 5:00-7:00pm. The Marist College Art Gallery is temporarily located 51 Fulton Street Poughkeepsie. Gallery hours are 12:00- 5:00pm, Monday–Saturday. Parking is plentiful.
