September 16, 2026 — Marist students came together in service and remembrance for Red Foxes Give Back for 9/11 Day, assembling 1,300 over Community Care Kits for local community members in need. 

Hosted by the Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership through a grant from 9/11 Day.org, with support from AmeriCorps, the event commemorated the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, honoring the spirit of service, unity, and compassion that emerged in the wake of the attacks. The event also provided students with an opportunity to address needs in the surrounding community, while carrying forward the legacy of service inspired by 9/11. 

“I’m really excited to give back to Marist and the surrounding community,” said political science major and Marist Votes student director Kara Dobbs ‘30. “It’s such an honor that the Center of Civic Engagement and Leadership can do this for everyone and it’s great to see all the kids in the Marist community come out.” 

Students spent the evening organizing supplies and preparing care packages filled with essential hygiene items such as shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and sanitary wipes. They also wrote handwritten messages of encouragement to include in the kits, adding a personal element to each package.  

“In times of crisis, like 9/11, the outpouring of concern and care was something that was very immediate in the days and months after that event,” said Dr. Melissa Gaeke, Director of the Center for Civic Engagement and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. “Even 25 years later, 9/11 continues to bring us together in remembrance while inspiring us to celebrate the spirit of service and kindness that is deeply rooted in the Marist community.” 

While assembling community care kits and chatting with new friends, students also reflected on the significance of service and September 11.  

“Today is special because we're commemorating 9/11,” said Civic Scholar and fashion design major Christian Selmon ‘30. “We also get the opportunity to socialize, meet new people, and serve others.” 

The completed kits will support community partners including, Grace Smith House, Dutchess Pride, Dutchess Outreach, Hyde Park Food Pantry, and Hope on a Mission. 

“I think being able to give back even in the smallest ways is important,” said Civic Scholar and fashion merchandising major Crystal Andrade ‘30. “Even if it’s 25 years later, 9/11 reminds us that giving back can make a great impact on the community and also makes you feel good too.” 

After surpassing their goal of 1,000 community care kits, Dr. Gaeke thanked the dozens of student participants for their help and dedication.  

“This event speaks to the spirit of the Marist community, and I’m grateful to all of you for dedicating your time and energy tonight,” said Dr. Gaeke. “By assembling these care packages, you are helping meet basic needs in the community while recognizing how simple acts of kindness can provide comfort, dignity, and compassion for our neighbors.”
