Two Student Publications Win Columbia Scholastic Press Association Awards
Measure - Gold Print General Magazine
Volume 8 of Marist Fashion’s Measure was awarded the Gold Print General Magazine by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. This award comes after rebranding the magazine from FM/AM to Measure to engrain the editorial voice closer to the Marist culture.
“Last spring, The Fashion Magazine at Marist took on a new endeavor. After completely rebranding ourselves from FM/AM into Measure, we set to build our voice into the culture of Marist and beyond. The Magazine Production class itself functions as a real-life editorial floor rather than the traditional chalkboard,” said Nora Hogerty ’22, Measure Student Editorial Director.
"Measure is now a completely student-created magazine. The students write the articles, photograph the fashion, model in the spreads and essentially touch all aspects of the magazine from cover to last word," said Director of Fashion Program, John Bartlett.
Measure allows students to gain practical, real-world experience and produce a publication from cover to cover. “The magazine affords the student team an industry-like experience and is essentially an internship as it challenges them to produce a magazine, work within a budget and meet all deadlines head-on. The Fashion Program excels because of these experiential courses, which give the students true industry exposure,” said Bartlett.
With the gold award being awarded to the Measure staff, Hogerty’s experience at Marist is more than academic, but also one where she has practical and professional experience. “ With the decoration of a gold medal on our masthead, I feel confident that my time at Marist has been not just a great learning experience, but a doing experience as well,” said Hogerty.
With Volume 9 on the cusp of being released, the Measure staff is invigorated by their recent achievement and looks forward to releasing the next edition. “I am confident this year’s issue is sure to be exploding with just as much, if not more, creativity,” said Hogerty. Marist Circle - Silver Hybrid News
The Marist Circle was awarded a silver award in the hybrid news section. “It's been incredible to watch these student journalists grow as writers and as people during their time working at The Circle,” said Lauryn Starke '23, The Marist Circle's Editor-in-Chief. “I'm thrilled to see them get the recognition they deserve. Their work shined, even when compared to the hundreds of other entries to the Columbia Scholastic Press Awards. I'm so proud of each and every one of them, and I can't wait to see how far they go.”
Ensuring campus coverage throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the paper. Still, through dedicated staff and student writers, the paper has been awarded the second Columbia Scholastic Press Association Award in its history.
Kathleen McNulty, Professional Lecturer of Journalism and Communications and The Marist Circle’s faculty advisor applauds the work done by The Circle staff past and present in overcoming challenges to create an award-winning student publication.
“It's terrific that their work is being recognized again, and it's especially meaningful considering the tough competition in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association contest. I'm proud to be their faculty advisor,” said McNulty.
