Christopher Castillo
Santo Domingo, Dominican RepublicAcademic School
Computer Science and MathCampus
New YorkFor Christopher Castillo, an international student from the Dominican Republic, the choice to study Computer Science, with a Concentration in Game Design & Programming, wasn’t just about academics, it was about finding an environment that fosters innovation, personal connection, and practical experience. While many students choose Marist for its beautiful campus and tight-knit community, he knew he wanted more: a university that mirrors the personalized, forward-thinking education he experienced back home.
“I wanted to go to a place where I would not only be taught about concepts in Computer Science, but also real-world scenarios and problems that would prepare me for internships and future jobs,” he explains. One standout moment in his academic journey so far was a trip organized by Marist’s Center for Career Services to Blizzard Entertainment. The visit offered an invaluable glimpse into a professional tech environment, complete with networking opportunities and insights from industry professionals. “This was honestly an amazing experience to be a part of,” he says. The experience underscored the importance of Marist’s career support services and their role in bridging the gap between campus and career.
His advice to fellow students? “Put yourself out there, especially in networking and collaboration. You will find plenty of people that have been coding or worked with tech years before you, and that’s okay; that doesn’t make you any less capable.” He notes that adaptability and teamwork are what really count. “Know your strengths and your weaknesses and work on yourself. Be willing to learn as much from your peers as you learn from your professors. Seek help from others, and the services that are available to you. Do that, and you will go far, regardless of where you started.”
With this foundation, he’s confident Marist is helping him build not only his skills but also his professional future — one connection, project, and challenge at a time.
