John Sellmeyer

Visiting Lecturer of Music, Interim Director of Athletic Bands

Bio

John Sellmeyer is a versatile freelance trombonist, educator, and native of Syracuse, NY, currently serving as Visiting Lecturer of Music and Interim Director of Athletic Bands at Marist University. He joined the Marist faculty in 2016 as an adjunct instructor and was appointed to his current position in 2025. At Marist, he teaches courses in music history, theory, appreciation, and performance while directing the university's marching and pep band programs and supporting the expansion of student performance opportunities. He previously taught applied trombone and euphonium at Dutchess Community College and maintains a private studio.  

As a performer, Sellmeyer appears regularly on alto, tenor, and bass trombones with ensembles throughout the Hudson Valley and Central New York. He is the lead trombonist for the Big Blue Big Band and performs with the Hudson Highlands Trombone Ensemble. His extensive ensemble experience includes the Northern Dutchess Symphony Orchestra, Woodstock Symphony, Western New York Chamber Orchestra, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Central New York Jazz Orchestra, Salt City Jazz Collective, nationally touring ska-rock band Razbari Sumthing, and numerous local and regional theater productions.  

He holds degrees from Onondaga Community College, Syracuse University, and SUNY Fredonia, with principal studies under William Harris, Carl Mazzio, and Jeffrey Dee. His affiliations include the American Federation of Musicians, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, NYSSMA, Jazz Educators Network, and International Trombone Association, and he is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi.
