U.S. Cyber Trust Mark: Enhancing Security for Smart Products Picture

As homes become smarter with interconnected devices like security cameras, voice-activated assistants, and even baby monitors, the convenience of managing everyday tasks remotely has never been greater. However, this convenience comes with risks—many IoT (Internet of Things) products can be vulnerable to cyber threats. To address these concerns, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is launching the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark, a voluntary cybersecurity labeling program aimed at making consumer IoT products safer.

What is it?

The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark will be a label applied to smart products meeting rigorous cybersecurity standards for qualification. Introduced just this past week by the FCC, in cooperation with UL LLC (UL Solutions), this program is one of several new steps by the agency to help consumers make informed decisions when it comes to connected devices in their homes.

IoT devices would carry a label with a QR code which will direct the consumers to crucial security information about the product, whether automatic security updates are available, how they can change default passwords, what the support period is for the product, etc.

How Does the Program Work?

Products that pass cybersecurity tests will be awarded the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark. These tests are conducted by accredited labs to ensure that the products meet the FCC’s standards. The voluntary program is designed to provide transparency and build consumer confidence in smart products. Consumers can easily scan the QR code to access detailed, easy-to-understand information about the product's security features, such as:

  • Automatic software updates and patches

  • How to securely configure the device

  • Information about the product's support period

This program is expected to work similarly to the well-known ENERGY STAR program, which educates consumers on energy-efficient products, providing an incentive for manufacturers to improve their cybersecurity practices.

Which Products Will be Included?

The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program applies to consumer wireless IoT products, such as:

  • Internet-connected home security cameras

  • Voice-activated devices

  • Smart appliances

  • Fitness trackers

  • Baby monitors

However, the program does not cover medical devices, motor vehicles, wired devices, or products used for industrial purposes.

Why is This Important?

Security for smart products is becoming increasingly crucial nowadays. With the increased number of IoT devices in every household, it is vital to make them secure. Often, IoT devices contain sensitive information that may be targeted by hackers in case they are not properly secured. The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark program empowers consumers to make safer choices by identifying devices meeting higher cybersecurity standards and provides an incentive for manufacturers to improve the security of their products.

What’s Next?

This program is still in the process of being rolled out, with the FCC working with stakeholders to finalize standards, label design, and testing procedures. Starting in 2024, when the program will be launched, manufacturers can apply for the label. This program could expand even further to other devices as it develops and increases international recognition. To both manufacturers and consumers alike, the U.S. The Cyber Trust Mark is a key step toward a safer, more secure future in smart technology.
