The Walkway Over the Hudson is a retired railroad bridge spanning the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie, New York, on the east bank and Highland, New York, on the west bank. It was originally built as a double track railroad bridge and was completed on January 1, 1889. It was taken out of service on May 8, 1974 after it was damaged by fire. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and was reopened on October 3, 2009 as a pedestrian walkway and part of the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park.  Today, "The Walkway" serves as a center of activity and special events in Poughkeepsie, including the annual Walkway Marathon, which begins on the Marist campus.  Source: Walkway.org, 2017
