Dr. Paula Checchi Receives NIH award
Dr. Paula Checchi (Assistant Professor of Biology) received notification of a successful National Institutes of Health Academic Research Enhancement Award. The program will provide $261,319 in direct fees to fund Dr. Checchi’s project titled “Role of Higher Order Chromatin Structure in Gamete Formation.” The long-term goal of the project is to “identify the regulatory mechanisms that control meiotic chromosome dynamics and prevent errors from being transmitted to offspring”. Such errors can cause fertility problems, birth defects, and lead to cancer. Funds will be used for equipment, conference travel, supplies and to pay undergraduate research trainees who will conduct the majority of the experiments.
