Dr. Kepner has affiliations with the Phycological Society of America, Northeast Algal Society, International Society for Microbial Ecology, American Polar Society, American Society for Microbiology, and the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography

Microbial ecology of aquatic and polar systems; extremophiles; exobiology; bacterial and cyanobacterial viruses; protozoology; ice-covered lakes; freshwater ecotoxicology.
