POUGHKEEPSIE, NY—David G. Roskies will deliver the 41st annual William and Sadie Effron Lecture in Jewish Studies on Monday, November 20, 7:00pm, in the Nelly Goletti Theatre. His talk, “Litvaks in Love: A Modern Memoryscape,” will use stories from his own experience and his many years of research to paint a portrait of the Litvak, or Lithuanian Jew, in this presentation. This event is free and open to the public.

Roskies is the Sol and Evelyn Henkind Chair in Yiddish Literature and Culture and a professor of Jewish literature at The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City. Since 2013, he has also served as the Naomi Prawer Kadar Visiting Professor of Yiddish Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A cultural historian of Eastern European Jewry, he has published nine books and received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1981, he cofounded (with Dr. Alan Mintz) Prooftexts: A Journal of Jewish Literary History.  

 A native of Montreal, Canada, and a product of its Yiddish secular schools, Roskies was educated at Brandeis University, where he received his doctorate in 1975.

William and Sadie Effron were longtime civic and cultural leaders in the Poughkeepsie community. The lecture series was established in 1976 to raise awareness at Marist and in the community of Jewish history, culture and current affairs.
