September 16, 2025 — Excitement filled the Dyson Center as Marist students shared how they’re gaining real-world experience through the student-powered credit union they conceived, Red Fox Financial (RFF). Last week’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, hosted by Marist University and Hudson Valley Credit Union (HVCU), celebrated the launch of the on-campus credit union, where hands-on learning drives the future of finance.

“Our students, faculty, and staff have worked incredibly hard to support this launch and make this new hands-on learning experience possible,” said Dr. William Lamb, Dean of Marist’s School of Management. “I’d especially like to thank our partners at HVCU for the enormous investment in time, thought, and resources they have made in this project. They’ve shown so much dedication to creating a positive learning experience for Marist students.”

Although the ribbon cutting kicked off the fall semester, Marist Red Fox Financial officially opened for business in February and has been serving the Marist community since. Marist Red Fox Financial has already welcomed more than 50 members and reached nearly $3.1 million in deposits, putting it close to its annual goal of $3.34 million.

Students, faculty, staff, and alumni have already begun taking advantage of its offerings, which include savings, checking, and money market accounts, as well as loan and credit options and digital banking solutions—all delivered through a cashless, model.

"It was really special being a part of the ribbon cutting and what it represents," said Shyamal Amin '26, RFF Club President. "When we set out to create Marist Red Fox Financial, the goal was always bigger than just managing accounts. We wanted to build a platform where students could gain financial experience, practice leadership, and make a creative impact on the community. A credit union by students, for students.”

The branch has hired 12 students, including seven this fall, and stands out as Hudson Valley Credit Union’s first fully cashless branch and the first to feature an Interactive Teller Machine (ITM) with a live agent. A student mock board and new internship opportunities have also been established, ensuring Red Fox Financial continues to grow as both a service to the Marist community and a training ground for student leaders.

“We started Marist Red Fox Financial because we wanted there to be a place on campus where students could learn the basics of managing their finances and leave college feeling independent and knowledgeable enough to handle things on their own,” said Layla Keen ’25, Red Fox Financial Co-Founder. “We also wanted to create opportunities for students to get jobs on campus and educate each other.”

University leaders, HVCU executives, HVCU board members, student representatives, and members of the Marist community all gathered to commemorate the launch. Staffed by student relationship advisors, the branch gives students opportunities in financial management, marketing, HR, and operations.

“We’re proud to partner with Marist University on this groundbreaking initiative that empowers students to take charge of their financial futures,” said Rick Lionhood, Executive Vice President and Chief Banking Officer at Hudson Valley Credit Union. “Marist Red Fox Financial is more than a branch – it’s a living classroom where students gain real-world experience while serving their campus community. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to education, innovation, and financial wellness.”

Located on the first floor of the Dyson Center, the credit union is supported by HVCU professionals who mentor students through real-world financial projects. Many of the student advisors are members of the Marist Red Fox Financial Club and employees of HVCU, bridging academic learning with professional development.

“The partnership is something completely new, and I’ve never experienced anything like it,” said Madison Chan '26, MRFF Club Vice President. “Working with an outside credit union means it isn’t just a club—it’s an opportunity I can put on my resume and gain real-world experience from.”

“There are only a handful of student-run credit unions in the country, and Marist is now part of that very select group,” said Jonathan Roberts, President and CEO of Hudson Valley Credit Union. “As a member-owned cooperative, our mission is to provide value to our members and our community, and Red Fox Financial is a unique way to invest in the next generation of leaders.”
