Returning to Marist
This information is for students who left Marist University voluntarily. If you were academically dismissed, please refer to the Reinstatement Policy.
Students who have been enrolled at Marist previously, do not have to reapply through the Admission Office to return from a leave of absence or withdrawal.
Regardless of whether you are out on a leave of absence or withdrawal, you can return to Marist. There are some things to consider before initiating a return. Be sure to consult this list at least two months before registration begins. Registration periods for the 15-week semesters begin in November and April of each year.
Contact Student Financial Services
Your Marist-based scholarships and grants are not guaranteed upon your return. Contact Student Financial Services (SFS) for further information on financial aid eligibility. If you have a financial hold, contact SFS to resolve it.
Contact Housing & Residential Life
Returning to on campus housing is not guaranteed. Contact Housing for availability and for more information. You can also explore local housing options off-campus on their website, as well.
Clear any Health Holds
Any student exiting for medical reasons will be required to submit medical documentation to either Counseling Services or Health Services that clears them to return to the University. Appropriate staff will review this documentation. This documentation must include a summary of diagnosis, treatment, ability to return to campus and fulfill the academic requirements of enrollment, and any need for accommodation or ongoing treatment while at Marist University.
Resolve Academic Restriction Hold
Students returning on academic restriction will need to contact the Center for Advising & Academic Services (CAAS) prior to contacting any other offices to be activated. Please send an email from your Marist email account with your name, CWID, and the semester you wish to return to Advising@marist.edu. You will be expected to follow any and all academic restriction requirements when you return.
Activate Your Registration Eligibility
To activate your records after a leave or withdraw, contact the Registrar’s Office. If you have not been in attendance at Marist for 4 or more fall/spring semesters, you will need to complete a short readmission form. This form is only available through the Registrar’s Office. If you are having difficulty accessing your Marist Mail please contact the Help Desk at Helpdesk@marist.edu or 845-575-HELP (4357) or visit their reactivation site.
Contact Your Advisor to Become Enabled
Once you are reactivated, you will need to contact your advisor to review your degree progress, and course selection for registration. Once they approve your plans they will remove their hold on your account. It is recommended that, if possible, you try to see your advisor during the initial advising periods for the 15-week sessions in October or March. This will allow you to be prepared to register when registration opens in November or April.
Thinking About Taking Time Away? Let’s Explore Your Options First.
Students may consider taking a leave from Marist for many different reasons—academic stress, financial challenges, medical concerns, personal circumstances, or unexpected life events. Whatever you are experiencing, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Many students discover that the right combination of resources, academic adjustments, or wellness support allows them to stay enrolled, remain on track, and feel more confident moving forward.

Types of Exits From Marist
A leave of absence allows students to temporarily leave Marist with the intention of returning in a future semester.
Common reasons include:
- Medical or personal issues
- Family emergencies
- Other circumstances
Federal guidelines require that a leave of absence must not exceed 180 days. If your leave will extend beyond this timeframe, you will be considered withdrawn from the University, but you may still return in the future.
A student who plans to exit the University with no intention of returning must contact the Center for Advising and Academic Services (CAAS). Students exiting during the semester may have financial and academic consequences. The Office of Student Financial Services can determine financial penalties. CAAS can discuss academic consequences.
General Information
Students who are officially exiting Marist must begin by completing the “Withdrawal Leave of Absence Form” through the Center for Advising & Academic Services by following the below steps:
- Log in to my.Marist
- Hover over the black Student tab
- Click on Advising-Undergraduate from the drop-down menu
- Under Academic/Advising Forms click on Withdrawal Leave of Absence Form
Note: This information is for students who left Marist University voluntarily. If you were academically dismissed, please refer to the Reinstatement section.
Academic Impact
- Leaving mid-semester may result in academic consequences (e.g., W, WF grades).
- CAAS will review your current course progress and options.
Financial Impact
- Financial aid and tuition charges may be affected.
- Contact the Office of Student Financial Services to review your account (StudentFinancialServices@marist.edu)
- If you borrowed federal student loans, you will receive an email with instructions on how to complete online exit counseling, which provides important information about loan repayment and forbearance options.
Campus Housing
- If you live on campus, notify Housing & Residential Life as early as possible (Housing@marist.edu)
- Housing is not guaranteed upon return, but requests will be considered based on availability.
Students requesting a medical leave must provide documentation from a licensed medical professional. Documentation must be signed and on letter head.
Any student who exited Marist due to medical reasons will need to contact Counseling or Health Services for reentry instructions. Students are required to submit medical documentation prior to their return. The documentation must be from a medical professional and include a summary of diagnosis, treatment, ability to return to campus, and fulfill the academic requirements of enrollment, and any need for accommodation or ongoing treatment while at Marist. The respective department staff will review this documentation and advise whether additional information and/or an interview or on-campus meeting is required.
Note: This information is for students who left Marist University voluntarily. If you were academically dismissed, please refer to the Reinstatement section.
Students planning to take courses at another college, while away from Marist University with the intention of applying the credits toward their Marist degree, must seek advisement from their academic advisor about which courses to take in order to fulfill their major and Core requirements and must obtain prior approval from the appropriate school dean and the Marist Registrar. Forms for this purpose are available in the Office of the Registrar.
Please note: Once the total credits from all sources have reached seventy (70), no further credits will be transferred from a two-year institution. Once the total credits from all sources reach ninety (90), no further credits will be transferred from other sources.
Students will not be granted a leave of absence/withdrawal for the sole purpose of taking courses elsewhere.
