Why study Communication at Marist University?

Industry-Experienced Communication Faculty
On top of a thorough theoretical foundation in communications, all of our faculty come to us with years of industry experience. Dr. Wenjing Xie is an Associate Professor and Director of the Integrated Marketing Communication graduate program within the School of Communication and the Arts. Her research revolves around the uses and effects of emerging communication technologies. Her work has been published in various peer-reviewed journals and books.
Dr. Arth comes to Marist from The University of Alabama, where he completed his Ph.D. in 2019. His research centers on sports media, particularly issues related to ethnicity, nationality, and sex/gender through the lens of global competitions such as the Olympic Games.
Joanna D'Avanzo has led the development of the advertising program at Marist; organized the annual Marist Portfolio Review in New York City, and mentored students to national recognition, including awards in The One Club for Creativity’s Young Ones Competition and top placements in the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition.

Simulate The Communications Industry In Classes
At Marist, we dedicate ourselves to providing hands-on learning opportunities for all of our students. From presenting advertising campaigns to real clients to participating in a bustling newsroom, students in each concentration develop a competitive edge of industry experience upon entering their chosen field after graduation.
- In Communication Campaign Management, public relations students visit nonprofit organizations in the community, research their client’s situation, and develop strategic communication campaigns for them.
- Advertising students compete in the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition, during which they create a strategic advertising/marketing/media campaign that is pitched to a corporate client.
- In Center Field, sports communication students simulate the sports desk of a newsroom by covering Marist varsity and club sports in depth as credentialed reporters and editors.
William is a storyteller, mentor, cook, and lifelong learner, driven by curiosity and connection.
Inspired to cover sports and step beyond the broadcast booth, William is a Communication major with a concentration in Sports Communication and a minor in Digital Video Production. His passion for sports began in his childhood with trips to Madison Square Garden, where the announcers shaped his experience. This passion has since evolved into professional-level experiences as an on-air host, producer, and editor for various sports-related content for Marist.

Marist students from across all disciplines visited Paramount's headquarters in Manhattan for a Road to the Workplace trip, where they toured the entertainment company's offices, attended an alumni panel discussion, and even sat on the iconic Forrest Gump bench—all part of a dynamic day of networking and discovering how Red Fox connections can open doors in the entertainment industry.
