B.S. Games and Emerging Media

Film, TV, Games and Interactive Media Department

Are you interested in games? Are you interested in creating, designing, and learning about cutting-edge media, such as apps, mobile technology, virtual reality, and online games?

The Bachelor of Science in Games and Emerging Media is a new interdisciplinary program. The program provides all majors with a foundation in programming, art, game design, UI/UX, game writing/storytelling, and the business of games. In addition, students have the opportunity to take courses in the ethics of games, online culture, storytelling across media, artificial intelligence, and other relevant topics. Students also participate in a game studio course, which is set up like a mock game studio. Students are also required to take a capstone course, which helps them establish a portfolio of games and media work.

Students in the program have the opportunity to concentrate in either :

  • Technical Development and Programming
  • Design, Writing, and Culture

The Technical Development and Programming students focus on the programming and software development side of game creation, while the Design, Writing, and Culture students take a customized mix of courses in writing, game design, and social aspects of gaming, depending on one's interests.

Students can also minor in Games and Emerging Media.

In addition, students can participate in the Play Innovation Lab, where they have the opportunity to design and research games, as well as help organize and participate in games-related events.

The core faculty of the Games and Emerging Media Program is drawn from the Computing Technology Department in the School of Computer Science and Mathematics, as well as from the Media Arts Department in the School of Communication and the Arts.

The Games and Emerging Media Program is:

  • Interdisciplinary
  • Innovative
  • Caring
  • Community-minded
  • Hands-on
  • Student-focused

Unlike other games programs, students at Marist benefit from having a well-rounded curriculum, while also having access to top faculty, facilities, labs, techniques, and tools. Students receive the full college experience--sports, music, theater, extracurricular activities--in a nurturing environment that prepares you for both a career AND a fulfilling life.

In the Marist Games and Emerging Media Program, we prepare you for careers in:

  • Game development/programming
  • Game design
  • Game art and animation
  • User experience design
  • Software development
  • Game writing
