Dr. Jeremiah Perez-Torres
Assistant Professor of Crime and Justice Studies
Bio
Dr. Perez-Torres is an Assistant Professor of Crime and Justice Studies, a researcher, and a foster youth advocate. He holds a doctorate in criminal justice, and his primary teaching and research interests are at the intersection of extremist propaganda and radicalization, countering/preventing violent extremism, and issues related to national and international security. As an educator, Dr. Perez-Torres prioritizes creating experiential learning opportunities in the classroom and collaborating with students on research outside of the classroom. As a foster youth advocate, he centers his lived experience to improve the lives of those in and aging out of the foster care system in order to disrupt the foster care to prison pipeline.
Currently, Dr. Perez-Torres serves on the Board of Directors for a non-profit named Hearts to Homes, an organization dedicated to providing support to those aging out of the foster care system by turning an empty apartment into a new home. In this role and many others, he centers the voice of marginalized communities and is passionate about supporting and mentoring students and foster care youth in navigating life and graduate school, pursuing justice related careers, and defying the odds.
