Australia, Sydney - Macquarie University

Explore one of the world’s most beautiful cosmopolitan cities while studying at a culturally diverse university.

Location

Sydney, a multicultural city, was first colonized by the British in 1788 and the sandstone buildings constructed during the time period can still be seen amongst the skyscrapers. The coastline is the social hub of the city with more than 70 beaches with waves ready for surfing or sand waiting for you to relax. Sydney is very accessible through underground rail and buses.

Institution

Macquarie University, founded in 1964, offers both semester and academic-year study abroad options. The university is one of Australia’s leading universities and is ranked in the top 40 Asia-Pacific region of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Rankings of World Universities. Currently, the school enrolls 8,600 international students. Macquarie University’s North Ryde campus is uniquely located in parklands only 30 minutes from Sydney’s city centre. Macquarie is connected to Sydney by underground rail with a train station on campus - a link which positions the campus at the hub of an economic corridor that runs from the university through North Sydney and south to Sydney airport. The campus is also easily reached by public bus.

Methods at overseas universities differ from those in the USA.  Australian students attend lectures, tutorials and seminars. Academic staff expect a high level of self-motivation and independence from their students. Students are expected to undertake independent research during free time.  There is less "assessment" with a final exam or essay determining the final course grade in many cases.  Participants in the Macquarie University study abroad program will enroll in a minimum of three (3) units. Four (4) units (12 Macquarie credits) are considered a full load, equivalent to 15 Marist credits. Classes at Macquarie University are taught in English.

Student Life & Co-Curricular

Sydney is a diverse city that offers a wide variety of activities for students to partake in such as visiting the local cafes, attending festivals, or catching a rugby game. The Macquarie Centre is relatively close to the university which provides students over 220 specialty shops, supermarkets, and entertainment locations. Macquarie University also has over 50 clubs, sports, and societies for students to join and meet fellow students. Upon arrival in Sydney, students will attend orientation to discover the campus and university life.

Housing

Program participants are offered a wide range of housing options in many local areas. Students are provided options of studio apartments, single rooms in apartments filled from a range of 4-6 people, alcohol free apartments, homestays, and public housing. Varying through the campus housing options, students have access to community lounges, meals, exercise areas, free internet, heating/air conditioning, cleaning services, and academic support. Homestays provide students with a room, meals, a place to study, and laundry areas. These are ideal for students looking to partake in the everyday life of a native to Sydney. Students are also provided the option to seek their own non-campus affiliated housing with recommendations by the University.

Program Cost

The program fee includes tuition (12-16 credits), accommodation, program orientation, scheduled academic excursions, and international health insurance. The program cost is based on full-time semester tuition and on-campus Marist housing. Students receive a detailed cost sheet once they have been admitted to the Marist Abroad Program.

Admission Criteria

• Minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA at the time of application
• Sophomore standing or higher at the time of study abroad
• Academic Advisor approval of program and coursework
