Austria, Vienna - IES: Vienna - European Society and Culture

Immerse yourself in a former member of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to discover a rich culture in the capital of Austria.

Location

Vienna, a city full of flair and charm, is the capital of Austria and one of the largest German speaking cities. The city is constructed with medieval architecture and palaces that are breathtaking sights. Austria’s culture and history is able to be seen not only on foot through the streets but also through the local festivals, opera, and museums.

Institution

Universität Wien, founded in 1365, is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Students with advanced levels of German are able to enroll in classes here. For students with beginner or intermediate German language skills, IES Abroad Vienna Center holds classes. The center, or Palais Corbelli, is a 17th century palace featuring classrooms, student lounge, library, printer access, a concert hall, and music practice rooms.

Academics

The IES Abroad European Society & Culture program allows students to study the culture, history, business, and politics of Vienna. Students also have the option of enrolling in internships. The program focuses on an intensive German language course during orientation and after, students are paired with locals to not only enhance their skills, but to grasp an idea of the culture and create relationships. Students are able to enroll in 15-19 credits a semester.

Student Life & Co-Curricular

The true Vienna can be seen through partaking in cultural events and activities. Students are able to embark on city tours, visit the museums, and attend the theatre. IES also provides participants with a “buddy” so that they may practice their German language skills and also interact with local students. The program also offers excursions to locations such as the Austrian Alps, Wachau, Styria, Prague, and many other locations.
