Study Abroad
Hungary, Budapest - Budapest Semesters in Mathematics (Math Majors Only)
Learn from Hungarian mathematics scholars at an institution created specifically for American undergraduate students, and enjoy the beautiful city of Budapest.
Location
Budapest is one of the largest cities in Europe and is a leading global city with strengths in commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. The historical evolution of the city can be seen in the many cultural institutions such as Museum of Fine Arts, Hungarian Opera House, and St. Stephen’s Basilica.
Institution
Budapest School of Mathematics was established for the specific reason to provide American and Canadian students the chance to study math while studying abroad. Since Budapest has a long standing tradition of mathematics education, the location and the faculty are committed to helping students learn from their excellence. The school is near the historic center of Budapest.
Academics
The BSM program teaches American and Canadian students the traditional strength of Hungarian mathematics. Topics covered relate to combinatorics, number theory, and probability theory. Problem solving and encouraging student creativity is at the heart of the program.
Small classes meet three to four times per week for a total of 56 contact hours each semester. The last week of the semester is dedicated to final exams. Classes are taught in English by Hungarian professors. These professors have had teaching experience in North American universities.
Students usually enroll in four classes per semester. Prior to attending BSM, students must have completed at least one semester of Abstract Algebra or Real Analysis.
Student Life & Co-Curricular
Upon arrival, the BSM staff will orient incoming students with the city of Budapest and the campus of BSM.
Housing
Students will be placed in housing with a roommate in the same program.
Program Cost
The program fee includes tuition (12-16 credits), accommodation, program orientation, scheduled academic excursions, and international health insurance. The program cost is based on full-time semester tuition and on-campus Marist housing. Students receive a detailed cost sheet once they have been admitted to the Marist Abroad Program.
