Netherlands, Amsterdam - CIEE: Amsterdam - Multiple Programs
You’ll find this progressive, multicultural city the perfect setting to explore Dutch society, politics, and culture.
Location
Often described as cozy or homey, Amsterdam is an accessible lively city. Amsterdam offers historic and modern sites for students to learn from in addition to the coursework completed. The multicultural city of Amsterdam is home to the stock exchange, central bank, and international companies.
Institution
Established in 1632, University of Amsterdam is located in the city center with a few satellite campuses throughout the larger Amsterdam area. From 1961 onward, the university has been a national university.
Academics
Students can expect to learn how to address today’s critical economic and social issues. Students take CIEE classes only with other CIEE students, and learn alongside some Dutch and many international students in their classes at University of Amsterdam. Lecture classes typically include 75 students; tutorials have small sizes of about 40 students. Grades are based on written exams, oral presentations, and papers. Grades will be converted to US letter based. In the fall or the spring, students can choose to study either Business & Culture or Social Sciences.
Student Life & Co-Curricular
The University of Amsterdam has variety of clubs for foodies to LGBTQ+; and sporting teams that semester students are welcome to join. Volunteer opportunities at local schools or with a group for a larger project.
Housing
Housing options vary from residence halls to homestays. Many residence halls are spread throughout the city center and provide single rooms, private bathrooms, and a kitchen, newer residence halls are located about 20 minutes from the city center. Homestays are an option for those looking to immerse themselves in the Dutch culture – as students will stay with Dutch speaking families.
Program Cost
The program fee includes tuition (12-16 credits), accommodation, program orientation, scheduled academic excursions, and international health insurance. The program cost is based on full-time semester tuition and on-campus Marist housing. Students receive a detailed cost sheet once they have been admitted to the Marist Abroad Program.
Admission Criteria
- Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application
- Sophomore standing or higher at the time of study abroad
- Academic Advisor approval of program and coursework
