Study Abroad
Senegal, Dakar - SIT: Senegal - Global Security and Religious Pluralism
Learn about peaceful coexistence and inclusive politics in Senegal while also examining the effects of global insecurity.
Location
Senegal is comprised of more than 26 ethnic communities that will provide students with the opportunity to easily examine the traditions, customs, and cultures of each ethnic group. Dakar, the capital, is a mixture of different religious groups that coexist in peace and inclusive politics.
Institution
The School for International Training (SIT) Senegal center is located in the neighborhood of Point E. The university is comprised of many staff members eagerly awaiting the chance to teach you a new language and a global perspective. All courses are taught in English though students are required to enroll in a French or Wolof language class.
Academics
The program duration is approximately sixteen weeks in which students will be exposed to new cultures while exploring how religion and politics impact a nation. Courses will be held in the SIT building. Students are given the option to complete an internship or an independent study project towards the end of the semester that require a final paper submission when completed
The curriculum offers courses, independent study projects, and internships. Students can enroll in a maximum of 16 credits per semester. Most courses are 3 credits. Internships and independent study projects are 4 credits. Students are able to study colonialism, global security, research methods, French or Wolof, and enroll in an internship or independent study project.
Student Life & Co-curricular
In addition to exploring the daily life in Dakar with your host family, the program includes cultural field trips. Past semesters have included excursions to Saint-Louis, southeastern Senegal, Petite Côte, Gorée Island, Joal-Faiouth Island, and Morocco.
Housing
Students will be housed in three different homestays throughout their time in Senegal. This type of housing lets students experience their host country through their new families while sharing meals and language. The first homestay is in Dakar and the two other short homestays will be in rural areas. A neighborhood or village hamlet will typically have two or three students in their residence. Students can expect that their host families will allow them to experience the true Senegalese daily life such as going to the local market or attending a sporting event with the family. Housing is location within walking distance of the University or by a 20-30 minute bus ride.
Program Cost
The program fee includes tuition (12-16 credits), accommodation, program orientation, scheduled academic excursions, and international health insurance. The program cost is based on full-time semester tuition and on-campus Marist housing. Students receive a detailed cost sheet once they have been admitted to the Marist Abroad Program.
