Alumni give industry-specific advice to students from a variety of majors

August 13, 2019—The Marist New York City center was the site of a professional networking reception hosted by the Office of Alumni Relations and the Center for Career Services last month. The event was the latest in a series of programs to help students get career-ready.

The reception gave alumni the opportunity to give back to Marist, as they shared knowledge and insight they gained during their postgraduate career paths and gave industry-specific advice from the fashion, finance, healthcare, law, and other fields to students. Students from an assortment of academic disciplines had the chance to meet with Marist alumni and build their professional contacts in a friendly and comfortable environment.

More than 100 people, including students, alumni, staff, and friends of Marist, gathered in the College’s Midtown Manhattan location.

“This event was a great opportunity for Marist alumni and students to connect at the College's new location in New York City,” said Dr. Mary Jones, Executive Director of Marist’s Center for Career Services. “Networking events are essential for students who are exploring a variety of career paths.  We have a community of engaged, dedicated alumni who are committed to the success of the College's future graduates.”

The alumni class years ranged from the 1990s to recent 2019 graduates, and they represented companies across a variety of industries, including communications, fashion, finance, healthcare, media and entertainment, and more. Most of the students who attended the event were rising seniors on track to graduate in 2020 and interning in New York City for the summer. There were a few rising sophomores and rising juniors as well.

Executive Director of Alumni Relations Amy Woods ’97 and Jones spoke at the event to update guests on recent initiatives at Marist. They also informed attendees about upcoming events.

Looking ahead, the Office of Alumni Relations will host Homecoming and Reunion Weekend from September 20-22, 2019, on Marist’s main campus in Poughkeepsie. The Center for Career Services, in addition to continuing its Road to the Workplace trips to Manhattan, plans to hold a number of events for students at the Marist New York City location this fall.
