Adrien, ‘23

Hometown: Woodstock, NY
Majors: Economics, Philosophy
Minors: Cognitive Science, Data Science

Campus Involvement: On campus, I serve as a Resident Assistant in one of the freshmen residence areas. I am also enrolled in the Honors Program and was on the executive board for Marist College Student Programming Council. In addition, I have volunteered through Campus Ministry and been a general member of various on-campus clubs.

Additional Activities: In my spare time, I enjoy playing basketball and engaging in fitness, particularly weight training and calisthenics. When I'm on vacation during the summer, I like to stand-up paddleboard. I also love to play with my golden retriever and bake apple pies! If it's the autumn, you can find me watching the New York Giants, my favorite sports team.

Advice for the Class of ‘25: Go to office hours. Meeting with your professors is crucial for understanding material and building strong relationships that will last beyond your college years. Don't feel obliged to stick to a friend group if you're not happy. You are free to move about and make new friends! Also, attend a variety of clubs; they help you discover your interests and passions, and if you end up not liking a club, that's okay! To end, I want to share a quote from Abraham Lincoln: "Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing."

Minor: Graphic Design

Campus Involvement: I am currently a marketing intern for Marist Dining Services, where I help promote the dining locations on campus by taking pictures, editing fun videos, as well as design graphics and illustrations. I am also on the board for both the Marist Asian Alliance as well as the Marist Anime Society, where I work in Public Relations, in which I create flyers and graphics for events. I'm a member of the Marist Orchestra as well, playing the violin. Aside from clubs and jobs, I have also designed clothing and stickers for the MPorium store, and graphics for student government campaigns. I am basically the go-to guy when it comes to art and design!

Additional Activities: I am really interested in art, as my major might suggest, so in my free time, I like to draw and paint, and create characters. I also enjoy photography and videography.

Advice for the Class of ‘25: As a first-year student, I wished someone would have told me that everything will be fine. When you first go to a brand new school for the first time, it can be kind of overwhelming, but as soon as you begin spending more time there, meeting new friends, and really getting involved on campus, you realize there is nothing to be afraid of. You will find your place here, and there is something for everyone. I couldn't believe when I began my own orientation as a freshman. The atmosphere was just so welcoming, and it put a smile to my face knowing that people are genuinely excited to have you here as a student. My time at Marist has been truly some of the best years of my entire school career. I have learned so much more, gained new interests, and met such a diverse group of people. Everything is just waiting for you, and you will truly see how amazing everything is.

Additional Activities: I enjoy painting, eating out at different restaurants, going to the movies, going to the mall, and going to the beach.

Advice for the Class of ‘25: One piece of advice I would give to the Class of 2025 is "go with your gut!" We all have a gut feeling when making decisions in life. In college you learn so much about yourself as you go through different stages. Listen to your mind and your body, because a gut feeling is never wrong. If something does not feel right whether that be changing your major to making new friends go with your intuition. I wish I listened to my "gut" when I was a freshman. I could have made my life so much easier. Also, ask for help. In college, we want to feel that sense of independence, but we all need help sometimes. Do not be afraid to utilize the amazing resources we have here at Marist.

Advice for the Class of ‘25: Transitioning to college can be a big adjustment and at first you may feel overwhelmed. This feeling of uneasiness is normal and will eventually pass. It's okay not to have your life figured out as an incoming student, and it's okay if you still don't have your life figured out when you're an upperclass student and it seems like all of your friends already know what they want to do with the rest of their lives. Most importantly, don't be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone, be open to new experiences. Welcome to the Fox Den, Class of 2025!

Marist will introduce you to your forever family and be ready to take that gift with open arms. Also, don’t be nervous to try new things: random classes, random sports teams, clubs, etc. you may find a new passion or love for something!

Advice for the Class of ‘25: The best advice I was told when starting at Marist was “You are here for a reason”. Entering college is a new and intimidating feeling. Especially for me, I felt out of place and scared of the hundreds of students who seemed like they had it all figured out. The simple phrase “I am here for a reason” helped remind me that Marist saw something special in me and deliberately chose me for what I had to offer. You are special and you have your own strengths that led you to Marist over thousands of applicants. Just stay confident and remember what makes you, you. Your skills, effort, struggles, family, and personality led you to Marist and remembering those things everyday will help you excel.

One of my advisors told me this during my freshman year and since then I have always taken the time to self reflect by trying new things, exploring new paths, meeting new people, etc. My advice for the class of 2025 is to learn about yourself as you continue to grow in this four-year journey.
