Argentina, Buenos Aires - SIT: Buenos Aires - Social Movements and Human Rights

Location

The largest and capital city of Buenos Aires, Argentina is a lively multicultural city often referred to as a melting pot. During the 16thcentury, Buenos Aires was a busy port city, which continued to rely on trade until the 18th century. Increased economic power during the 19th century helped to propel Buenos Aires into a cultural magnet for migrants. Present day Buenos Aires boasts a modernized district of the city, Puerto Madero, in addition to San Telmo – the oldest barrio of Buenos Aires – rich of culture, museums, and churches.

Institution

For more than 50 years, SIT has been a program provider focused on experiential education for students seeking to become effective leaders, professionals, and citizens.

Academic

Working with human rights organizations such as Madres de Plaza de Mayo, ESMA, and Servicio de Paz y Justicia, students will gain a firsthand understanding of the struggles that activists face. Students will immerse themselves in the Spanish language by taking part in language courses, community service work, and working with the local community.

Students will attend lectures and discussions focused on social movements in Latin America and Argentina as well as human rights issues of gender, discrimination, migration, and education. Courses offered include Social Movements and Human Rights in Argentina, History and Human Rights in Argentina, Research Methods, and Spanish language. In addition, students are required to complete either an Internship or an Independent Study.

Spanish language courses are offered in small class sizes.

Student Life & Co-Curricular

Excursions to destinations in Argentina also provide supplementary learning environments. Locations such as Northwestern Santa Fe and Patagonia provide students with the opportunity to learn more about social and environmental impacts on human rights.

Housing

Students will live with homestays in Buenos Aires. This is an opportunity to learn more about the language, culture, and traditions. During the excursion to Patagonia, students will stay with an indigenous Mapuche family in the mountains for two days.

Program Cost

The program fee includes tuition (12-16 credits), accommodation, program orientation, scheduled academic excursions, and international health insurance. The program cost is based on full-time semester tuition and on-campus Marist housing. Students receive a detailed cost sheet once they have been admitted to the Marist Abroad Program.

Admission Criteria

• Minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA at the time of application
• Sophomore standing or higher at the time of study abroad
• Academic Advisor approval of program and coursework
