Study Abroad
Australia, Queensland - KEI: Griffith University
Indulge yourself in the rich coastal life of Australia while gaining a global perspective in the vast subjects you can study.
Location
The state capital of Queensland, Brisbane, is the fastest growing city in Australia with a dynamic culture. Brisbane was founded in 1824 as a British penal colony and is located on the banks of the Brisbane River. Gold Coast, a nearby neighbor to the capital, is home to some of the most marvelous beaches in Australia. Queensland is comprised of many theaters, national parks, shopping areas, outback adventures, and welcoming cafes.
Institution
Griffith University (GU) is characterized by an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to teaching and research with a focus on global issues. Griffith is a ‘young’ university, established in Brisbane in 1971 to offer students a different educational experience and with a focus on new areas of study. Since it started teaching in 1975, Griffith has grown in both size and diversity. Griffith now enrolls over 40,000 students, including 10,000 international students, and offers a huge range of courses through the arts, business, health, environmental, education, and many more. Currently, more than 1000 courses are offered each trimester.
Academics
Spend a trimester in this coastal area while studying a range of topics in a program that focuses on global issues. Students will study amongst a diverse student population and gain a global view towards their classes.
A standard course at Griffith is 10-credit points and is considered to equate to approximately 10 hours per week, including all forms of teaching contact and private study. A typical full-time study load at Griffith is 40 credit points, or 4 courses. Approximate credit point transfer to Marist College is 10 credit points = 4 credits. 4 courses is 16-credits at Marist College. Students are able to conduct or participate in undergraduate research in areas such as: engineering, health (excluding nursing and psychology), information and communication technology, and science. Fields such as engineering, IT, and social work may present opportunities for students to partake in work integrated learning.
Student Life & Co-Curricular
KEI organizes many cultural activities for the students to participate in. Students are able to embark on an adventure in Brisbane and the Gold Coast for orientation with visits to the beach and Lamington National Park. A trip to Sydney will also occur during the trimester where students are able to visit landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbor, and variety of museums. The university also offers a wide range of clubs, sports, and activities that students can join. Students are encouraged to engage themselves in the community with volunteer opportunities.
Housing
Students have two options for housing—the Gold Coast or Nathan. The Gold Coast is a 20 minute commute and students live in shared off-campus apartments. Apartments consist of a kitchenette, living area, bathroom and double rooms. Residence halls are also available for an additional fee. Housing at Nathan consists of on-campus residence halls with shared lounges, bathrooms, and double bedrooms. Laundry facilities are available in both areas.
Program Cost
The program fee includes tuition (12-16 credits), accommodation, program orientation, scheduled academic excursions, and international health insurance. The program cost is based on full-time semester tuition and on-campus Marist housing. Students receive a detailed cost sheet once they have been admitted to the Marist Abroad Program.
