Meet the Dean, Dr. Deborah Gatins

Our students enter professions that are the backbone of an enlightened and productive society. We are counselors, researchers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement workers and psychologists. We nurture society, we inform public policy, we discover cures in labs, we protect, and we lead. Our students are engaged in activism and service in our communities as well as dialogue and research with our faculty to create solutions that improve the human condition.

I always pictured myself being a professor in some sort of way, maybe even at Marist. This was my top choice when I applied to colleges, and every experience I've had affirmed that Marist was the right choice for me.

Marist happily took me into their community, and I am so content with my decision to transfer. I have grown tremendously as a person throughout my time here thus far. I have met my best friends who have turned into family and been provided with ample opportunities to succeed in my career.

I chose Marist to complete my undergraduate years because of the tight-knit community and small class size. I have been able to make meaningful relationships with professors and have access to opportunities I may not have had in a class with 200-400 people.

While all of the faculty in the Educational Psychology program was wonderful, Dr. Stivers, Dr. Szabo, and Professor Finnerty all played a big part in shaping my career. With all three of these professors, I have found a connection inside and outside of the classroom that allowed for my learning to feel personal.

I love helping people, so I want to share these experiences with children and let them know that they, too, can have these opportunities. I want them to know that they’re capable of more than they realize and that things can and do get better.

Marist has a deservedly great reputation, and students graduate with an amazing experience. I highly recommend coming to Marist, especially for those who are looking to become teachers. The programs the College offers, both academic and extracurricular, have exceeded my expectations. I will miss Marist after I graduate this spring.
